“I bet. Now you know why Allison won’t touch you,” I said.

“Excuse me?” Allison asked angrily. “Who the hell are you to put words in my mouth?”

Milo growled and shifted into his cat form and charged toward me. I snapped my attention to him at the last moment and hopped out of the way, shifting into my wolf. I trotted away from Allison and turned to face Milo head-on.

We were going to duke this out until he came clean.

ALLISON

I watched as Milo and Calvin shifted into their animal forms, confirming, without any doubt, they were who I thought they were. It was the first time I saw the process happen, and I struggled with making sense of it. I knew they were shifters, that much was made apparent not too long ago. But I still hadn’t had time to process that fact.

Running for your life constantly tended to take up most of my thoughts and time. That, and training.

Still, there was only so much of the testosterone-filled argument that I could handle. Now that their fight had turned physical, I was tolerating even less. But I wasn’t sure how to stop a fight between two raging animals, much less ones who were Milo and Calvin.

I turned toward Aidan. He met my gaze and shrugged.

“You’re no help,” I muttered.

“Apologies, Alice,” he said.

I smiled. “Don’t be. I understand.”

It never seemed to bother me when he called me Alice. Not like it did with Milo. Perhaps it was the simple fact that Milo refused to acknowledge my name. Maybe it was simply Milo. He had a way of grating on my nerves. Everyone’s nerves, by the looks of it.

I sighed as growls and barks tore through the morning air. This wasn’t how I wanted to start my day. Helpless, I watched as they tackled each other and rolled into the woods. Trees started to crack and break and if something didn’t break them apart, I worried the forest would be desolated.

However, it was probably best to let them get out their frustrations before attempting to break them up. If that was something that could even be done. I really wasn’t sure. Once again, I found myself out of my element.

“I can’t stand around and watch this,” I said.

Aidan chuckled. “They are fighting over you.”

I stared at him, puzzled. “How can you say that? You were standing right here when Calvin accused Milo of hiding something.”

“He is. I sense the shadows around him.” He shrugged. “But that is his story to tell.”

“Do you think he’s going to betray us?” I asked, turning my body to face him.

“Only Milo can tell you that,” Aidan said. He narrowed his gaze in the direction of the fight. “They’re going to kill each other.”

“You’re right,” I said through a heavy sigh. “I should probably step in now.”

“Careful. Roses are delicate,” he said.

I smirked. “This one isn’t as delicate as you want to believe.”

“Perhaps, but I would be devastated if you got hurt,” he said.

I met his gaze. The depth of them always took my breath away. I smiled. “I’ll be careful.”

“Please do,” he said with a nod.

I turned and stepped toward the sound of the fight. Milo and Calvin returned to the clearing. I wasn’t sure who was winning, and I figured it didn’t really matter. I still needed all three of them to get home. Plus, with the fight ahead of us, coming sooner than I cared to admit, I figured they needed to save as much energy as possible.

When the two beasts broke apart to stalk each other in a circle, I took a step forward. Heat flooded through me. My hands filled with a sensation that felt like ice and fire. I lifted my hand and focused on the small space between them. Sucking in a breath, I released a blast of white magic in between them. It exploded against the ground. Dirt and debris shot into the air, catching Milo and Calvin off guard. The two creatures jumped back and then settled their shock-filled gazes on me.
