I snapped my attention in the direction his voice came to and narrowed my eyes on him. He sat in a shadowy corner of the room. I hadn’t noticed him before he spoke. I was too caught up in the shock of waking up in his room, back in the cabin, with an uncomfortable amount of time lost. Seeing him made my heart race.
“Trying to give me a heart attack?” I asked.
“Sorry,” he said. “I didn’t mean to startle you.”
I stared at my leg again. So much time had passed. I hated it. “What exactly happened?”
“What all do you remember?” Jasper asked.
I sighed. “Everything up to the point I passed out.”
He leaned forward and nodded. He frowned and a crease appeared just above the bridge of his nose. “Kai and I were out in the woods when we heard you scream. We followed the direction of the sound until we found you, lying unconscious. Kai carried you back.”
“Kai?” I asked, interrupting him. “Did I hit my head too?”
Jasper chuckled. “That was the one thing we didn’t look for.”
“I’m pretty sure you said Kai carried me. So, if I’m not suffering from a head injury, hell has definitely frozen over.” I smiled.
“Neither of them, actually,” Jasper said.
“Oh.” I rolled my eyes and almost fell backward. “I feel a little dizzy.”
“You lost a lot of blood,” Jasper said.
“Yeah, that sounds about right,” I said as I recalled the puddle under my leg, back in the woods.
“We did the best we could to stop the blood and stitch the wounds closed,” Jasper said, keeping incredibly calm. “But there is still a very high risk of infection, and we weren’t able to determine if there was any permanent damage or broken bones.”
“This must be where the doctor comes in?” I asked.
“Yup.”
Though I waited for him to add to his response, he clearly wasn’t going to volunteer any information. “When will he be here?”
“In about a week,” he said, simply.
“That long?” I asked, shocked it wouldn’t be sooner. “Don’t you think it’ll be too late to do anything if there is something wrong?”
He chuckled. “Relax. He helped us stabilize you from over the phone.”
“You’re really calm about all of this,” I said.
“As are you. But I’m more relieved than anything.” He shrugged. “Besides, it’s not every day I have a beautiful woman in my bed. What’s not to love about that?”
Heat flooded through my cheeks. “You have a good point, but I’m still trying to catch up to everything, I think. And I’ve never known you to be a charmer?”
“I hadn’t been given the opportunity to charm you.” He shrugged. “I’ve been known to be smooth when I need to be. We were almost too late saving you, so perhaps I’m trying to make sure I tell you everything before it’s too late. You know, taking advantage of that second chance.”
I smiled. “Fair enough. Thank you for the compliment.”
“You’re welcome,” he said, smiling in return.
He had a beautiful smile. One that made my heart skip a beat and race all at the same time. But I had to focus on what happened while I was out. However long that was.
“How long was I out?” I asked.
“Just a couple of hours.” He sat back in the chair. “Don’t worry, you didn’t snore.”
