“Are you sure this is okay?” she asked, holding my gaze again.
I nodded. “I’m sure.”
She slid herself farther onto the bed and took in everything within my room as I struggled with deciding on what to do next. Then I realized she was wearing Jasper’s clothing, which was several sizes too big.
“I can give you some of my clothes to sleep in if you want,” I said.
She shook her head. “I think Jasper was going to find my things he dropped in the woods. I thought he would be back by now.”
“I’ll go find out if he needs some help,” I said and started to turn around.
“No!” she shouted.
I hesitated and settled my attention on her.
Her cheeks turned red. Fear burned through her beautiful blue eyes. “Would you rather I stay here?”
She nodded. “I’m sorry if it would be an inconvenience, but I’m too scared to be here alone.”
I nodded and smiled. “Not at all. It would be my pleasure. Are you hungry?”
She shrugged. “I could eat.”
I smiled. “I am going into the kitchen right there and whip us up something. I’ll be in your sight the entire time.”
She nodded.
About half an hour later, I was back in the room with a couple of beef sandwiches and some chips. We ate over small talk and once she had finished, she yawned.
“I think I should tuck you in and let you rest,” I said.
She nodded and laid down on the bed. I pulled the blanket over her and made sure it was nice and tight.
“Good night,” I said and started to leave the room.
“Please don’t go,” she said. “Lay down with me until I’m asleep.”
I smiled. “I’ll lay down with you over the blanket until you go to sleep. Then I’ll go and sleep on the couch. No one will come back here. Not even Kai. I won’t let a thing happen to you, okay?”
She looked at me like she didn’t believe that she was safe in my room.
“I promise,” I added.
She nodded. “Deal.”
I laid down on the bed next to her. She rolled her back toward me and tucked herself into a ball. I stared up at the ceiling until her breathing evened. As I lay there, my eyes grew heavy. I knew I should get up, but I couldn’t bring myself to move. It was too good of a sensation, laying next to her.
My eyes closed as sleep beckoned me.

CASSIE
I turned my back to Chase and mulled over everything I had just learned.
I didn’t know what it was about Chase, but he soothed me. His ever-permanent calm brushed off on me and I felt safe with him. Safer than I had felt in a long, long time. There was something incredibly comforting about his presence and the moment that he tried to leave, I panicked. I was so grateful he stayed.
Jasper had many of the same effects. Though he made me feel warm and fuzzy all at the same time.
