I leaned against the counter and let my thoughts take over. I wasn’t thinking about anything specific. My mind filtered through all the random things as they came and went. I fell into a sort of trance with the hum of the microwave.

Then it dinged and startled me from my thoughts. I turned around to pull out Cassie’s food. I took the short trek to my room, poking my head into the doorway before stepping inside fully. I wanted to make sure she was awake and hadn’t fallen back to sleep. She needed all the rest she could get, especially with how close to death’s door she was.

I smiled as she turned her attention on me. She carefully sat up and returned my gesture as I held out the food.

“I’m starving,” she said, taking the plate. “Thank you so much.”

“There’s plenty, so eat up,” I said and took a seat in the chair stationed in the corner of the room.

“Don’t mind if I do,” she said and dug in. She moaned and licked the sauce from her lips. “Dear God, this is amazing.”

My mouth hung open as she devoured the food and continuously licked her lips clean. She even sucked on her fingers and my dick hardened, pressing against the unforgiving fabric of my jeans. The things I wanted to do with her mouth. The things I wanted to do to every part of her body.

She caught me staring and smiled. Her cheeks turned a beautiful shade of red.

“You’re staring at me again,” she said.

I nodded. “I can’t help it.”

She shook her head. “You’re fine. I don’t mind. It just catches me off guard.”

“I’m not sorry,” I said and stared at her lips, wanting to see what they tasted like. “I won’t apologize for admiring you.”

These thoughts normally never crossed my mind and I had met my fair share of beautiful women, but there was something about Cassie that set her worlds apart from the rest. Something I couldn’t put my finger on yet, but I was willing to spend the rest of my life figuring it out.

“Good,” she said. “I don’t expect you to.”

She took another few bites and sighed. “Chase is such an amazing cook.”

“I made that,” I said.

Her eyes widened. “Is there anything you both can’t do?”

“I’ll let you know when we find out,” I said.

She giggled. “You’re cocky too.”

I shook my head. “Not usually.”

She nodded and continued to eat. I took my moment to direct the conversation back to the woods and her running away as she had.

“Now that you have most of your meal done, I wanted to ask you a few questions.”

“Okay, go for it,” she said.

“Why did you leave?” I asked.

She gulped and barely met my gaze. “Seemed like the right thing to do considering the circumstances.”

“How so?” I asked.

She shrugged. “I wasn’t welcomed by Kai. Sure, what I did was wrong, and shouldn’t be forgiven easily. Even if I was trying to live beyond the night. I understand that doesn’t excuse my behaviors. But I figured if I stayed, it would cause unnecessary friction between you and Kai. I didn’t want to be the cause of that.”

“Kai causes friction regardless of who is around. That is just who he is.”

“Still,” she said.

I shook my head. “And despite everything, you still left. What happened that made you decide to pack up in the middle of the night and sneak away? Why didn’t you wait until the morning?”
