Chase approached us, placing his arms between the two of us.
“You would love the opportunity, wouldn’t you?” Kai said, egging me on.
Chase forced himself between us even more. “I think this house has endured enough damage for one day. Don’t you?”
I snapped my glare toward him. “You’ve got some fault in this too. You were supposed to protect her.”
“Hey, I tried to calm him down. He’s the one who lost his shit,” Chase said. “I did what I had to, to defend myself and keep Cassie safe.”
I gestured to my room. “Does this look safe to you? Did you see how she looked when you two decided to expose us and fight in my room?”
“It was the best I could do. I’m sorry your room got destroyed,” Chase said. “Kai insisted on bringing her food. He went out of his way to collect a large number of fish for a feast he wanted to have. He swore up and down he didn’t have a hidden agenda. He told me he was going to be civilized.”
Kai breathed heavily as Chase explained. I processed through Chase’s side and when he was done, I leveled my gaze on Kai.
“Is this true?” I asked.
Kai met my gaze, almost as if in a challenge which made my bear stir. “Does it matter? The entire time that girl has been in this house, you’ve believed her over me. You’re too damned googly-eyed over her to think beyond the feelings in your dick to believe a word I say.”
“I’m asking, aren’t I?” I said, voice low. If he wanted to make a move, it was going to be the last one he made. “But if you honestly don’t have anything to say for yourself, then I think you should leave for a while.”
“She’s hiding something,” Kai explained. “I can see it, clear as day. And all she can do is spin lie after lie. So, yeah. I got angry. Chase came in to try and stop me and that pushed me over the edge. I’m not sorry.”
I never felt rage in the way I had as I stood before Kai, hearing him admit he was purposefully trying to undermine everything. The fact that he turned on his brother was just a low blow too far, even for him.
It was taking everything inside me not to rip him a new asshole.
I managed to take a step back from him and pinched the bridge of my nose as I worked to take in deep breaths to calm myself. “You do realize not everyone is your freaking enemy, right?”
Kai lifted his eyebrow but didn’t bother to reply. “Your point is?”
“I seem to recall you behaving similarly toward me when I first came to know you and Chase. To sum it up in one word: Hell. Pure, unchecked hell.”
“That was more than one word,” he inserted.
I rolled my eyes and huffed. “The point is, you were so suspicious of everything I said and did, you damn near killed me just to prove yourself right. You do that with everyone until they run away and leave you solo. But here’s the thing, that girl out there won’t survive if you continue to treat her like this. Sad to say, I already know you don’t give a damn. You only care about yourself.” I stared at the floor as my words tumbled out of my mouth.
“Chase,” I continued, “He was chill. Pretty accepting, as per his nature. You didn’t buy it, according to the stories he told me. You needed a bit more convincing because you didn’t believe he wasn’t out to get you. He fought tooth and nail, literally, to get where he is now.”
“Not to sound like a broken record over here, but what is your point to all of this?” Kai asked.
“Cassie doesn’t deserve your hatred,” I said. “She’s done absolutely nothing to you.”
“Agreed,” Chase added.
“She was in my bed when I found her!” Kai snapped.
“Oh, boohoo… how dare a gorgeous woman ever appear in your bed,” I said.
“Oh, real mature,” Kai muttered.
“Before you even begin to talk to me about maturity, take a long fucking look in the mirror, my friend,” I said.
“This isn’t going to end well, is it?” Chase asked.
“Well, I’m not going to apologize,” Kai said.
“That is on you, man,” I said, throwing my hands up in the air. I was starting to understand exactly what Chase was referring to, and it wasn’t worth any more of my time or energy. “I want you to stay away from her. Do you understand me?”
