“I already covered that,” Jasper snapped. “Since when are you so high and mighty?”
“Since I don’t make mistakes that could kill us all,” Kai yelled, stepping closer to Jasper.
“Nothing happened,” Jasper said, enunciating each word slowly just to drive the point across. “And for someone so concerned about being watched or overheard, you’re losing control of your temper.”
Kai, who hated being called out on his indiscretions, huffed a hot breath through his nose. He narrowed his eyes on his roommate. “Your mistakes better not fall back on us.”
“They won’t,” Jasper said.
Chase stepped closer. “We should gather our food and head back. The storm is about to hit.”
Kai nodded.
Within minutes, the trio had collected what food they needed and started to turn back. It wasn’t long before Kai started sniffing the air with a contorted expression on his face. Jasper sniffed the air and caught a scent that not only stood out to him but was incredibly familiar. He simply couldn’t figure out why.
“What is it?” Chase asked Kai. He sniffed the air and then shrugged, not catching onto the same aroma that alerted Kai and Jasper.
Kai shook his head. “I don’t know.”
“We should stick together,” Chase said and stopped as Kai handed off his collection of fish to Jasper and took off into the woods, heading in the direction of their home.
Jasper sighed. “You sure there isn’t a tranquilizer strong enough for him?”
Chase shook his head. “Come on… we better try to catch up to him.”
Jasper and Chase took off running, but Kai had lost them. The direction he headed toward remained unchanged, thanks to the scent trail he left behind. To save energy, Jasper stopped after a few minutes. Chase followed suit.
“We’ll catch up quick enough,” Jasper said.
Chase nodded. “Not like we don’t know where he’s going.”
“And if someone who shouldn’t be there is lurking about…” Jasper said, letting his voice trail off. He shrugged leaving the rest unsaid.
“It’s the last thing the trespasser would ever do,” Chase finished for him.
Jasper sighed. He pitied the poor soul who infringed on their property. Though it was likely just his imagination, a passerby, or anything in between. With Kai, anything was possible.

CASSIE
“Who the hell are you and what are you doing in my bed?” A stern voice said, startling me awake.
The second I opened my eyes, I realized just how grave of a mistake I had made by staying in the cabin and sleeping on a stranger’s bed.
An angry man stood over me, glaring at me as though I was nothing more than a filthy bug that had invaded his home. I sucked in a breath, but I was too terrified to move. His deep brown eyes focused on me, filled with rage. His thick, blond hair was pulled back from his face, which somehow made his features stand out more. It didn’t help that he had bulging muscles covering his entire frame, and all of that towered above me menacingly.
He was as gorgeous as he was terrifying. Part of me wondered what his hair felt like, or his short beard.
“Well, trespasser?” he asked.
“Trespasser?” I repeated barely above a whisper. “I didn’t mean—”
“Not only did you break into my home, but you are also trespassing,” he snapped.
I squeezed my eyes closed. This had to be some sort of vivid nightmare. I discreetly pinched myself. It hurt.
Nope. Not dreaming.
