She giggled. “So how long before I can walk again?”

“I would give it a couple of weeks. I’ll leave some special herbal tea and pain meds that should help speed along the healing. I’ll come back and check on you once those are done and see how you are faring.”

“Thank you,” she said.

“My pleasure. Now, I’m going to clean this and get it rebandaged,” he said while pointing to her leg.

He took careful time gently cleaning around the stitches. “You did these, Jasper?”

I nodded. “I did. Had some medic training back home.”

He nodded. “They are almost perfect. Great job.”

“Thank you,” I said, puffing my chest out a little.

“I would highly suggest letting her leg air out for no more than an hour each dressing change. I also want you to start changing it more often and let me know if the bruising spreads or gets any worse.”

“Will do,” I said.

Marcus wrapped up his exam and I got ready to escort him back.

“You’re coming back, right, Jasper?” Cassie said.

I faced her, taking in the hopeful glint in her eyes. “Of course.”

She smiled. “You better.”

The trek back was uneventful and just as quiet as the trip to the cabin. As soon as we were back at the meeting spot, he promised once again to return in a couple of weeks to see how Cassie was healing before shifting into his dragon form and taking off.

I didn’t wait until he was out of sight before turning around and running back to the cabin. Back to Cassie.

CASSIE

The past two weeks had gone by in a blur.

Chase and Jasper had assumed the roles of what I could only refer to as doting boyfriends. They took shifts taking care of me. It was nice to be cared for. And different. I wasn’t used to such treatment. I had been in the role of caregiver since my parents died, taking care of my sister. Being on the receiving end was a change I could get used to. But I would never allow it to make me complacent.

Jasper and Chase even helped me take my first steps since being caught in a bear trap by giving me a cane. Jasper made it. The design was simple, but I loved it. That was a couple of days ago.

Even Kai had started to come around more and more, though he still decided to keep his distance from me, which also meant he didn’t confront me. I considered the progress an improvement. We had even graduated to civil niceties like saying hello to each other.

Now, I was managing well enough on my own. I didn't need the men’s help as much. I could even take myself to the bathroom with the use of a cane. I stepped out of Chase’s room and headed for the coffee pot. I poured myself a cup, turned around to lean against the counter, and breathed in the enticing aroma.

Jasper rounded the corner, skipped to a halt, and smiled at me. “Well, look at you! Good morning.”

I chuckled. “Good morning to you too.”

“It’s still so different seeing you up and about. I like it,” he said.

Chase came into the kitchen, pushing his way to his room. “Good morning, my sweet.”

“Hey there,” I said.

“My sweet?” Jasper asked, raising an eyebrow.

I shrugged. “What’s all the rushing around for?”
