Jasper shrugged. “Think about it. Is it really too far of a stretch?”
“I suppose you may have a point,” I said. “This is the only thing she has left of her parents. Considering everything she had gone through to find the place I doubt she would let it go without a fight.”
“It doesn’t matter if the place is rightfully hers,” Kai said. “I bought it fair and square.”
“There are loopholes she could exploit, I’m sure,” Jasper added. “But don’t get your panties in a twist just yet. I have a solution that I believe might be beneficial for us all.”
Kai rolled his eyes and crossed his arms over his chest again.
“What are you thinking?” I asked.
Jasper smirked. “Simple. We ask her if we can stay.”
Kai shook his head and started to dig through the fridge again. “Eureka!”
I ignored him and turned to Jasper. “That is an excellent idea, but have you thought about what we would do if she says no?”
“Why would she tell us no?” he asked.
Kai and I both stared at him as though the answer was obvious. We had just mentioned how much this place meant to her. It was the only thing she had left of her parents, who had died when she was far too young.
He waved our expressions away. “You guys have no faith.”
“Or we’re simply more willing to point out the flaws in your logic more than you are,” Kai said.
He blew a raspberry. “All right, my plan isn’t full proof, but come on… if she didn’t love us or want to be with us, we wouldn’t have gotten this far. She will say yes. I know she will.”
“But if she doesn’t?” Kai said.
“You’re wrong. You’ll see,” Jasper said.
“Right,” Kai said as he munched on a piece of roast beef. “Keep lying to yourself, which has worked wonders for you in the past. I, myself, already have a backup… not that I need one. She’s my mate. I go where she goes.”
Jasper growled. “We’ve all mated with her. She doesn’t belong to only you.”
“If you had listened to her when she talked, you would realize one important fact,” I said. “She belongs to no one.”
Kai tossed the meat into the trash then wiped his hands on his jeans. “Right well, good luck with that.”
“Are you guys really arguing?” Cassie called from the bathroom.
“We’re only having a friendly debate, love,” Jasper called back. He met my gaze and shrugged.
“Look,” Kai said, “I’ll find the deed. If it turns out to be her place, then we can ask her if we can stay. But if she turns you both down, don’t say I didn’t warn you.”
“You wish,” Jasper said.
I shook my head. “I think she should retain the right to choose who she wants to be with.”
Both Kai and Jasper glared at me.
I threw my hands up in the air. “Don’t look at me when this blows up in your face.”
I returned to the dishes, hoping beyond all reason Cassie could stay in all our lives. Forever.
