“Why would someone do such a thing?” I asked.

Marcus nodded. “My question exactly. I walked them through stabilizing her as I was busy with an influx of other patients needing help for the same thing.”

“Oh my God,” I said. I was already starting to connect the dots. This was what Rowan and Bryson were talking about the night I found them talking with those humans.

“It was obvious someone was hunting shifters. The appearance of these traps and their injuries had been increasing over the past few months, and there haven’t been any signs of stopping,” Marcus continued.

“Then I showed up and told you exactly what you needed to know,” I added.

He nodded. “Your help put some of the missing pieces in place. Now we know that my initial suspicion was correct. The wolves were working with humans. Though I didn’t suspect the wolves until you told me about the meeting, it makes the most sense they were behind all of this.”

“Why do you say that?” I asked.

“Because those wolves are greedy little bastards,” Bret said. “Bryson being the worst of them all.”

“You got that right, and Rowan isn’t too far behind him,” I added.

“Yes, well, be that as it may, we now know who they are going after and that is all thanks to you,” Marcus said.

Bret took a seat at the island. “But we still have a long way to go.”

“Do the wolves know where Kai lives?” I asked.

Marcus shook his head. “It’s only a matter of time until they do if they don’t already know.”

“Who are the humans he’s working with?” I asked.

“That’s exactly what we are trying to find out,” Bret said.

“Kai said he killed his girlfriend years ago, shortly after he first started shifting. He lost control of his animal and she was too close to avoid the fallout. Needless to say, he banished himself from the other side.”

“Oh, the poor guy,” I said.

Bret stood up as the coffee pot finished brewing. I took the time to process everything I just learned. Minutes later, a fresh, hot cup of coffee was sat in front of me.

“Maybe we can do something to call off the attack? Talk to the family and smooth things over the best we can?” I asked.

Marcus shook his head. “Her family is likely not even aware of the attacks. Whoever is behind this, they were close to her.”

“So, it’s a blood debt… we’re just not sure who is trying to collect?” I asked.

“Yup,” Bret says. “Fun times.”

“Well, if there is anything I can do, I will,” I said. “I don’t want to see anyone else get hurt.”

Bret chuckled, and at the same time Marcus said, “We got it covered.”

“What?” I asked. “Do you not want me to help?”

“We don’t want you to put yourself in danger,” Marcus said.

“I can handle myself, thank you very much,” I snapped, words coming out sharp. It annoyed me that they were treating me like I was made of porcelain.

“We don’t doubt that, but we also just got you back,” Bret said.

I continued to argue my position. I could be helpful. They needed to accept it. But the men wouldn’t have it. After an hour of defending myself and demanding that I help and being shut down, I gave up for the moment. I needed sleep.

In the morning we would revisit this topic.
