“We just got started,” Marcus said. “I mentioned the three of us patrolling the region all at once.”

“Where do I come in?” she asked.

Marcus sighed. He pinched the bridge of his nose as though the idea of Emily being helpful was beyond him. I couldn’t blame him to a point, but he wasn’t going to win this one, and he knew it.

“Do I really need to repeat myself?” she asked. “I’m helping. End of discussion.”

“The way I see it,” Marcus said, continuing where he left off, “We divide the region into thirds.”

Emily scoffed. “Nice.”

Marcus leveled his gaze on her. “You will go to Kai’s cabin and keep an eye on things there. Set up wards, or any other protective measures that you can think of. We need to provide a barrier around the property somehow. The hunters may be drawing closer but that doesn’t mean we should make it easy for them.”

Emily leaned back and huffed. “I know what you are doing, and I don’t like it.”

“This is the compromise,” Marcus said. “Take it or leave it.”

“Take it.” She huffed. After several seconds, she smiled. “I’m already forming some ideas on what to do. Of course, I’ll have a better idea once I’m there.”

Marcus nodded. “I’ll take the region covering the cabin. I can be close by if Emily needs me, and Kai is one of my friends. I feel as though I have a certain responsibility to them.”

“Say no more,” I said. “Jax and I will take the last two sections.”

Jax turned his attention to me. He hated when I spoke for him. I loved doing it if only to see the reaction on his face. I wasn’t disappointed.

“What do you think? Flip a coin?” I asked.

Jax pinched the bridge of his nose. “Does everything have to be a joke?”

I shrugged. “Not everything. But where’s the harm in a little gamble for who takes what region?”

Marcus said, “You’ll take the upper region.”

“Party pooper,” I muttered.

Marcus continued as though I hadn’t spoken. “Jax, you take the last one. Be sure to debrief Bret on the other locations of the camps that you were able to find. With luck, we can find more and head them off.”

“Will do,” Jax said with a nod.

Marcus shook his head. “These aren’t regular humans. They will likely stand their ground and fight rather than run and hide. We need to be prepared for anything.”

“Especially since it’s only a matter of time before they find the cabin,” Emily said.

I smirked. Firecracker, indeed.

After a few final details, we were dismissed to prepare ourselves to leave. I stayed back with Emily and leaned in close, “You gave in on Marcus's plan a bit too easily, don’t you think?”

She shrugged. “Maybe. Maybe not.”

“What’s going on in that beautiful head of yours?” I asked.

“Nothing. I just figured that beggars couldn’t be choosers. I don’t agree with the plan, but being stationed at the cabin is better than nothing.”

“Interesting,” I mused.

“It was the best way forward. Like Marcus said, it was a compromise and I needed to take it. That’s all.”

I pulled her in close and breathed in the scent of her hair. “Be careful out there. I can’t have you missing pieces of your body.”
