“Oh, you’re my hero,” Cassie said.
I giggled as I turned my attention to Cassie. “Thank you.”
“Come, let’s have some girl talk,” she said as she took a seat on the couch.
Cassie and I continued to chat while Marcus wrapped up his little meeting. I already loved her like a sister. It was also nice to have someone of the fairer sex to talk to. She wasn’t in the least turned off by my being a witch, and that made me love her all the more. In fact, it seemed like the only one who had an issue with me was Kai. And I didn’t care to figure that out.
“So, tell me about you,” I said.
“Where do I start?” she asked, still smiling.
I shrugged. “Do you have any family outside your men?”
She shook her head. “I have a younger sister. She’s on the other side, living her best life with her men.”
I nodded. “You must miss her.”
“Every single day. I had to take care of her since our parents died, and one day I found some heirlooms and that was the last day I had to take care of her.”
“Maybe we could go see her someday?” I offered.
She sighed. “I would love that. Now, what about you?”
“My family is an entire coven,” I said. “Unfortunately, we’re not on the best of terms.”
“How come?” she asked.
I shrugged. “They arranged for me to be married to a wolf.”
“Oh… that’s… That sounds horrible,” she said.
“Depends on the arrangement. Mine was. The guy was abusive. But it wasn’t all bad,” I said.
“How so?” she asked.
“The guy I was promised to is the son of the alpha of the wolf pack here. They are also the ones who were setting up traps for a group of humans in an effort to catch Kai.” I threw a thumb in his direction. “I managed upon the information by accident, which in turn, brought me here to you.”
“Wow,” she said.
I nodded and smiled. “See? Not all bad.”
“Kismet, right?” she asked.
I chuckled. “Something like that.”
Minutes later, Marcus shakes the men’s hands again.
“And there is my cue,” I said.
“You’re not leaving, are you?” Cassie asked as she stood from the couch with me.
I opened my mouth, but Marcus beat me to the punch. “She’s staying with you.”
Cassie smiled even bigger. “Yas!”
I laughed. “I’m only going to go see him out and get started on my work.”
Kai grunted.
