Oh, crap, I thought seconds before the group attacked.

EMILY

Rowan stormed forward. I had prepared to throw magic at him, but he had advanced too quickly for that to be an option anymore. The last thing I wanted was to blow myself up. As he closed the gap between us, he wrapped his hands around my arms, squeezing them tightly. His expression twisted into one of rage. His eyes even darkened to an almost black color. “You’re going to come with me, like it or not.”

He tugged on me, as though I was going to obey him and let him drag me away.

“No, I’m not,” I said.

“I will drag you kicking and screaming if I have to,” he said.

I caught sight of Marcus bending his neck above me, mouth open wide, aimed at Rowan’s head. Rowan looked up as hot breath poured over us. He screamed and jumped back, releasing my arms.

Marcus’s teeth snapped together, and he lifted up with a groan, almost as though he was disappointed, he didn’t get the chance to relieve Rowan of his head. I smirked at him before settling my glare on Rowan.

“Get that beast under control!” he shouted at me.

I balled up my fist and landed one on the side of his face.

The alpha’s son had more than a few wires twisted in that warped brain of his. The nerve of him to put his hands on me and try to drag me from where I wanted to be. I didn’t give a damn about the arrangement my family had with the wolves.

I was done.

I settled my glare on Bryson. “I suggest if you want a son after tonight, you get him under control.”

Rowan growled.

“Oh, I’m sorry. Did I strike a nerve?” I asked.

Rowan’s eyes narrowed on me. “I’m warning you…”

“No,” I said, cutting him off. “I’m warning you to take you and your pathetic, abusive, greedy hands back to your pack and forget that you had ever met me. Or you won’t have a family to go home to.”

“You and what army?” he asked.

“Are we done with the pathetic lover’s quarrel?” Collin asked, poking his nose into business it didn’t belong getting into.

“Unless you also want a piece of this,” I said, gesturing to myself, “You’ll be a good little heathen and keep your mouth shut and your feet planted in that ground.”

He glared at me. “How dare you!”

He and Rowan both took a step forward. Magic filled my palms. Fire as hot as my fury filled my hands. I aimed them in front of me and settled my gaze on the two men who faltered in their steps. I smirked and released my magic, launching it at the ground beneath their feet.

“You were saying?” I asked.

It was bad enough that Rowan felt the need to continuously demonstrate to me how much he could overpower me for the past couple of years. And he reminded me whenever he deemed it necessary. If I took too long bringing him tea or food… I got a beating. If I got a tone with him in the slightest, littlest bit… I got a beating. If he had a bad day… I got a beating.

Anything that didn’t go exactly according to his plan, I got a demonstration on just how much bigger and stronger he was. But the beatings weren’t the worst thing I had to go through. And I’ve delivered as many punches as he had in return.

But tonight, I had enough. This was the point where he finally got it through his head, I would never belong to him. In this life or the next. He wasn’t more powerful than I was, I simply obeyed my parent’s wishes and tried to make the best of the situation I was handed. He wasn’t better than me. I was too amazing for him.

And though I had little idea of who this Collin character was, he was no better than Rowan.

As far as I was concerned, the two of them could go to hell together.

The men started throwing weak, pathetic insults my way. I ignored them and rolled my eyes. Then a sound erupted above the racket in front of me. The noise pulled my attention to a part of the crowd surrounding us. The humans aimed their weapons at something large. The wolves started to growl and snap their teeth in the air.
