One of her lackeys, a skinny blond with crooked teeth, said, “Or you’ll what? Hex me?”

His partner, a chunky guy with no eyebrows, laughed so hard his round belly shook. “So terrifying.”

I pretended to check my nails and sucked on my teeth before settling my gaze back on them. “Nah. I wouldn’t want to break a nail.”

“That’s not the only thing that’s going to break on you,” blondie said.

“Filthy witch,” the fat one said. “You should have left well enough alone.”

“Oh, you do know how to speak,” I said. “Here I thought you were as dumb as you looked.”

“That’s not very nice,” he said, playing up a pout.

“Awe…” I said, playing up the sarcasm. “I hurt the poor man’s feelings.”

He smiled and cracked his knuckles on his palms. “Now I’m gonna have to teach you a lesson in respect.”

I laughed and then squared my legs, dipping into my ready stance. “Oh, that was a good one. You got any others?”

The two men charged. The skinny one got to me first and tried to land a punch to my gut. I grabbed his wrist with one hand, turned my back toward his torso, and rammed him in the nose with the elbow of my free arm. Blondie jerked back, moaning as he covered his nose.

The fat man tried to grab me, and I out the way, spinning to face him head-on and kicking him in his precious jewels. He bowled over. I rammed my knee into his face. With both men holding their noses with blood oozing from around their fingers, I faced the woman who continued to try and break down Cassie’s door.

“Your turn,” I said.

She ignored me.

I approached her and cleared my throat. She ignored me again.

I was angry before, but now I was furious and gripped her shoulder, digging my fingers underneath her collar bone. She nearly collapsed to her knees, crying out in pain.

“Let go, dammit!” she said.

“Next time, I suggest you listen when I try to get your attention. Didn’t your mother tell you it was rude to ignore people?”

“Must have missed that day in class,” she snapped, prying at my fingers to release her.

I nodded. “Oh, you got jokes too. Must be a thing. I’m jealous.”

She spat in my face. “Laugh at that, bitch.”

I wiped my face free of her spit then punched her in her temple. Her face was knocked into the wall. She groaned as she shook off the dizziness that surely filled her head. Then she slowly glared at me.

I smirked at her. “Challenge accepted.”

She stood and swung her fists at me, one at a time, chasing me down the hallway. Each one I managed to avoid. Frustrated, she stopped at the end of the hall and growled.

“Hold still!” she demanded.

I shook my head. “Nope. Gonna play hard to get. It’s more fun this way.”

With rage in her eyes, she charged me. I twisted out of the way. She stopped in the middle of the room and took one look at her friends before settling her death glare on me. “You’re going to pay for that.”

“Funny how that keeps getting said to me and I have yet to pay for anything,” I muttered.

She charged. This time, I held still. When she got close enough, I punched her in the gut, gripped her by her shoulders, and dipped low, pulling her over my head. As I climbed back to my feet, she faced me. I kicked her in her stomach, sending her flying down the hall. She collapsed onto the floor. I stood and turned around. The skinny blond had recovered. The fat guy was still rolling on the ground holding his nuts with one hand and his nose with the other. I shook my head.

“Men are such babies,” I muttered.
