“What’s all of this for?” he asked.

I shrugged. “My way of saying sorry for last night.”

I took the bacon to the plate sitting on the island and added the freshly cooked ones to the pile. I met Jax’s confused expression.

“What happened last night?” he asked.

“What I want to know is what part of last night?” Bret added.

Marcus sighed, stood from his seat, and pulled me close to him. “We just want you to be safe.”

“I understand that,” I said to Marcus, then to Jax, I added, “I had to use magic in a not so elegant way to make a point.”

Marcus retook his seat, he filled him in on the details while I returned to the stove, where Bret still stood.

“We had a visit from the wolves last night,” Marcus added.

I smiled faced Bret. “You should eat.”

“I will,” he said then leaned in close and whispered, “Any regrets between us?”

I twisted to face him so I could look him in the eyes. His silver orbs were outlined in a band of stormy grey. Webs of platinum sparkled throughout. His gaze was intense and nearly took my breath away. Never mind the spike in arousal that flooded through me. I bit my lip. “Should there be?”

He smiled and grabbed a plate from the cabinet. It appeared that he took my response as answer enough, which was fine by me. I wasn’t sure how comfortable I was in having a deeply involved conversation with him about the sex we had with Marcus and Jax sitting at the island discussing the “visit” from the wolves.

Without another word, he headed to the island and started piling food on his plate. Once he was done, he sat down and joined the conversation.

“Do you think they will be back?” Jax asked.

“More than likely,” Marcus said. “But we have other problems to worry about right now.”

I placed the last few remaining pieces of bacon into the pan. They sizzled loudly, drowning out part of the conversation taking place behind me.

“What’s going on?” Bret asked.

“Right, we couldn’t wake you earlier this morning,” Marcus said.

“Well, I’m awake now,” he said. “What’s up?”

“Jax…” Marcus said.

I turned around and divided my attention between the conversation and the last of the bacon.

Jax leaned in close. “There are camps of humans all over this region. They’re gearing up for something big. And what’s worse? They’re getting closer to Kai’s cabin.”

“Why would there be so many camps all over the region if they were only after Kai to begin with?” Bret asked.

“That’s what we need to find out,” Marcus said. “One of the many growing questions.”

That piece of information didn’t make sense. There was only one reason I would gather an army, and that wasn’t to attack only one person but to take out many more. An entire group of people. I quickly connected the dots. Whoever was attacking Kai, it wasn’t just him they were after but all shifters.

This stank of Bryson and Rowan, and the deal they made with the humans.

“Wait,” I interrupted. “Does that mean the humans are hunting all shifters?”

Though I already knew the answer, I wanted confirmation of my suspicions.

Marcus leaned back in his chair. He thought about his answer for a moment before he said, “It would appear so. I suspect it has something to do with the deal the humans struck with the wolves. It could be for control over the territory… it could be something else. Regardless, that is something we need to get to the bottom of.”
