“Not only that, but this is the first time I’ve been able to see my sister in a whole year,” Cassie said.

Cindy laughed. Her heart swelled as they welcomed her and even wanted to torture their men a little. “Oh, I love you all already.”

The girls waved Cindy over, and she took a seat and settled in. Minutes later, Allana brought over a glass of wine. And for the next twenty minutes, the girls got to know each other.

Meanwhile, on the opposite side of the hotel, King stood in front of the massive fireplace, swirling a glass of brandy as he listened to the men discuss the latest news from the mortal world. For a majority of the time, he wasn’t paying attention to what was being said. He hated meetings like this. They were boring. And though he would never admit to it, he was anxious to get to the party.

They were supposed to be hanging out, relaxing, and letting business go for the night. That wasn’t too much to ask.

Besides, it wasn’t like anything had changed. Everything had been the same. All clear, no news, and peaceful as far as shifters were concerned.

“What do you think, King?” Marcus asked.

King turned and settled his attention on the dragon shifter. “About what?”

Milo laughed. “What? Were you that mesmerized by the fire, friend?”

King snorted. “Something of the sort, I suppose. Why?”

“Declan suggested that we head to our rooms and get ready for the party,” Marcus added. “You had been silent and lost in thought this whole time. Is everything okay?”

King nodded. “Yeah. I’m fine. Getting ready sounds like a plan.”

“Nothing is bothering you?” Gunnar asked, narrowing his eyes on his friend. He knew better than most that there was almost always something bothering King. If nothing was bothering him, he would probably implode.

King shrugged. “Yeah, so?”

“The world is going to end now,” Declan said, who also knew King better than most. He had grown up with the one-armed lion shifter.

“Just tired,” King said.

The men laughed.

“Stop staying up all night long getting your dick wet,” Bret said.

“I thought we were supposed to be getting ready?” King said.

One by one the men stood and headed to their rooms to get ready for the ball.

* * *

Twenty minutes later, the men were dressed and in the ballroom. Guests started to arrive by the handfuls. Another five minutes and Kai was going to go find the women himself.

Chase clapped the man on the shoulder. “Relax. They’ll be down here when they are ready.”

“What’s taking them so long?” he asked.

Chase shrugged. “I have no idea, but they are women and they do like to talk. My guess is they are putting on the finishing touches and they’ll be heading this way soon enough.

Silas joined them, holding a cup of blood. Kai frowned. He didn’t understand why the vampires were in so good with King, but he didn’t care for them in the least. Still, he promised Cassie he would be on his best behavior, and he intended to make good on his word.

But if the man didn’t stop shoving his cup of blood all over the place…

“There they are,” Aidan said, almost breathlessly.

Kai’s eyes followed the direction he was looking. Instantly his eyes met Cassie’s beautiful blues. Her hair was piled on top of her head and perfect ringlets fell along her cheeks, perfectly framing her face. Her cheeks blushed and she wore an amazing gown that accented her skin. Soft pink. It suited her.

He didn’t bother to excuse himself, he stepped forward, crossing the ballroom floor to her. She smiled at him and his breath was stolen from his lungs. He took her hand and led her to the floor.
