He smiled. “I’m glad you noticed. Thank you.”

I shook my head and sighed. He was something else. But I couldn’t deny the fact I was curious about what sex would be like with him.

“I want to do it,” I said.

BROCK

Silas clapped his hands together. “Excellent. Then we have no time to waste. Xavier, escort Cindy back to her room so she can prepare.”

Xavier nodded and held out his hand for her to take. The corners of her lips curved upward as she slid her hand into his and he lifted her up, tucking her fingers around his arm. I fought against the jealousy that burned through me at the sight. I was going to have my moment soon enough.

I wondered why Silas didn’t immediately get defensive toward Xavier after finding out he slept with her too. Maybe he heeded my words more than I gave him credit for. Perhaps he was willing to share for once in his entire existence. Regardless of the reason, I was anxious to have my moment with her.

Still, as she moved, I followed her with my gaze as she headed out the door until she was completely out of sight. Even then, I stared at the empty space waiting to see if she would return and take me here and now. After several seconds, I returned my attention to Silas who sat with his lips pressed into a thin-lipped frown.

“What?” I asked.

He shook his head. “You should be punished for what you had done. Instead, you get to sleep with her.”

“You’re right,” I said.

His eyes met mine, full of shock and surprise.

I smirked. “The only way to make sure she is safe is to mark her. And the only way to make sure we can stop Collin before he does too much damage is to use her as bait.”

“I’m not sure it’s going to work. It may be enough, but we don’t know that,” Silas said.

“Why?” I asked.

“You heard her. Collin was repulsed by her. Who’s to say that three vampire marks won’t make that even more so?”

I shrugged. “We have to try. We don’t have anything else. Besides, she could cut herself. Mark or not, that’s enough to drive any newborn vampire into a frenzy.”

Silas pressed his fists into the top of the desk. He didn’t like the situation. He only went with it because he had no other choice. And here I thought we were getting somewhere.

“Besides,” I added, “if it wasn’t for the girl, we wouldn’t be in this mess in the first place.”

Silas shook his head. “No. If I hadn’t sent the man on his way when he first crossed our path, we wouldn’t be facing this.”

“You’re saying you should have killed him that day?” I asked.

Silence settled between us. I took his lack of response as an answer. Moments into the growing quiet, Xavier returned.

“She’s getting ready,” he announced.

“Why are you not pissed off at him for sleeping with the woman you marked?” I asked, gesturing to Xavier. He eyed me wearily before settling his attention on Silas.

“Because what you said was true. We all want her. And she’s so damn independent and strong-willed I was afraid she would refuse me if I took her choice away from her more than we had. Thanks to our conversation, I’m glad I listened to that. But there is one thing I want to clarify with you before you get ahead of yourself.

“What is that, exactly?” I asked.

Silas nodded and then faced me. “Before I let you mark her, I want to know why you did it in the first place.”

“Do what in the first place?” I asked confused.

“Why you changed the human,” he said.
