Iwoke up to Ember’s five o’clock alarm. I had slept exceedingly well. She felt so right in my arms. I had a moment of regret for losing touch with her for the last decade. All the nights of loving and all the days of her company were lost.
I wondered if there was a way that we might be able to rekindle our relationship after this was all over. In just the short amount of time we had been together reminded me of why I had asked her to marry me so long ago. We both had changed a lot, but perhaps not so much that we wouldn’t be good together.
The sound of the shower brought me out of my reverie. I needed a shower, but I also needed to wait until she was done. One look at her voluptuous, curvy body was make me forget about all of the children running around, my partners in the house, and the threat we are facing.
She didn’t take long, but my cock was immediately at attention when she walked out, wrapped in a towel, with her hair wrapped in a towel on top of her head.
“I left the water running for you,” she said, smiling as she walked by. She had an evil smile as she trailed her hand across my chest. She always did have a thing for my chest.
We hurried up and headed downstairs. After breakfast was served, he headed outside and then came back in with a serious look on his face.
“Guys, you need to see this.”
We all headed outside. Ember and the kids joined us.
Our SUV had been completely destroyed. Someone had managed to get past the night security with some knives and baseball bats. All of the windows had been busted out. The tires were slashed. The headlights and tail lights had been bashed in. They had also done considerable damage to the body of the SUV.
Shards of glass surrounded the vehicle. The mirrors hung from the sides, like droopy balloons.
A note, scrawled in silver sharpie, left no doubt, if we had had any, who had done the work.
“Leave now.”
“Oh, my goodness,” Ember explained. She grabbed Gage’s arm. “I’m so sorry. I don’t know how, but I’ll pay you for the damages. Maybe it would be better if we left. I can’t have the kids or you guys hurt in any way. He’s not going to give up.”
Gage put two fingers under her chin and lifted her face to his. “We’re not going to give up and he’s not going to win. Understand?”
She nodded with tears in her eyes.
“Besides, he’s got full coverage,” Jared piped up.
Gage nodded. “And I’ve been meaning to upgrade anyway.”
The sheriff showed up about fifteen minutes after we called him. I wasn’t sure he had been able to finish his first cup of coffee before we called. He looked very grumpy.
We had worked with the sheriff quite a bit in other cases, and had formed a friendship.
“Sheriff Davenport. It’s good to see you again,” Gage said, reaching out to shake his hand.
“You, too,” he said. “What kind of mess did you get yourself into this time, Gage?”
“Would you believe that someone brought mess to me. This time, I’m innocent,” Gage held up his hands in a surrender gesture.
The sheriff smiled. “Uh-huh.” He looked at the SUV. “What did I tell you boys about four wheeling around these parts?” he joked.
“Jared drove this time,” Gage joked back.
Then, Gage explained the situation.
He nodded. He was familiar with Duggers and his handiwork. As a matter of fact, he had read over the report on the barn that had been taken just days earlier.
“The problem is that there is no proof that he or anyone specific is responsible for this. No one saw anything. The vehicle was by the barn, so no one heard anything.
The sheriff took a lot of pictures and notes. Then, he shook everyone’s hand and took off.
