I took to pacing and continued to mull over the current conundrum. I barely had gotten started in my career. Things were starting to move forward for me. A baby would change everything. Regardless of if I kept it or not.

I was in trouble big time. And I was starting to spiral into a rabbit hole of what-ifs. None of which were answers to the current situation. There was only one person in the entire world I could count on to help me out of something like this, and she was my best friend forever, Cassidy. Besides, she was with me that fateful night. Maybe she could piece together things I had trouble recalling. And she had all the answers. Usually.

Three rings into the call, she answered, sounding half-asleep. “Hello, gorgeous.”

“Did I wake you?” I asked.

There was some rustling on the other end of the line. “Nope. I was awake. Well, sort of.”

I nodded as I continued to pace my living room. “Are you sitting?”

“Why?” she asked, sounding a little more awake.

“You’re going to want to sit down for this,” I said. “I have a whopper.”

“Why? What’s up?” she asked. “Are you okay?”

The sound of alarm in her voice woke her up entirely and I knew I had her full attention. I was going to need every bit of her attention I could get. “I’m not entirely sure how to answer that question. Now, are you sitting down?”

“Eh,” she started. “Close enough. I’m still in bed.”

Okay, so she was just rolling over. Oh well. Close enough… as she had said.

“I’m pregnant.” I had no idea how to break the news, so I blurted out the news and let the words hang in the air between us.

“Say that again,” she said. “You’re what?”

“You heard right. So, I would rather avoid saying the word again if you don’t mind,” I said.

“Uh… How?” she asked. “Don’t get me wrong, but you don’t exactly have a sex life. And last I was aware of, you were adamant about protection.”

“The night of the St. Patrick’s Day Party, and yes, we used protection,” I said, figuring that would be enough of an explanation. “And thanks for pointing my fabulous love life out to me. Rather, the lack thereof.”

“Hey, I’m just keeping it real. Besides, what I said is the truth. But, anyway, you’re kidding, right?” she asked. She had a level of excitement in her voice. I wasn’t sure I liked that.

Actually, I was pretty sure I didn’t.

The more I thought about her reaction, the more I was positive I hated the idea of her being excited.

“I would never joke about this. And I have no idea what I’m going to do,” I said.

“Well, for starters, you need to tell him. Confront him and see where that leads. After all, it’s his baby too. Especially since I felt the chemistry oozing off the two of you.”

Her words floated through the line as I stopped mid-step and stared at a spot in the wall. I wasn’t sure I had her words come across correctly, and I needed some solid advice.

“I thought for sure you two were going to be more,” she said.

I shrugged, not that Cassidy was aware of the movement. “Neither of us wanted more.”

“That’s not the impression I got, miss too focused on her career to give a relationship a try.”

“Now is a fine time to tell me this,” I muttered.

“You’re welcome,” she said. “Now you have my golden nugget of wisdom. I gift it to you, my friend. Did that help?”

“Not really,” I lied. “Finding him could be impossible, you do realize.”

“Never hurts to try,” she said through a yawn.
