“Because things could have gone so differently,” he said. “I’m grateful every single day they haven’t.”
I sighed as I settled my gaze back on my son. “Me too.”
Things almost had gone differently. Massively. If Weylan hadn’t talked me into giving him another chance, I wouldn’t be holding my son right now. He would belong to someone else. He would be gone, and I would have empty arms and an even emptier heart.
I silently thanked the Universe for looking out for us that fateful day.
Now that I have my family, there was no way in hell I would have been able to go through with the adoption. Not in a million years.
There was a knock on the door. Weylan stood up to go answer it. He opened the door and smiled.
Cassidy and Guy walked in, both with flowers in hand. Guy had a box of what I assumed were cigars. He handed them to Weylan. “We’re stepping outside in a minute to try those out.”
Weylan chuckled. “Okay then.”
Cassidy set the flowers on a nearby table and then walked to the edge of the bed. She squealed. “Oh, the little guy is so stinking adorable!”
“You want to hold him?” I asked.
She gasped. “Does Aunty Cassy want to hold my baby nephew?”
She slid her hands gingerly around him and then lifted him to her chest.
“Well of course I do!”
She cooed and stared down at him and rubbed his little face with a finger before sighing.
I chuckled. If I had known this baby was going to have such a massive effect on everyone, keeping him would never had been a question.
“I have to admit,” she said. “You both did pretty well at this whole creating another human thing.”
“Thank you,” I said and stifled a yawn. If only she knew that the baby was so much more than human.
“And on that note, I should probably take you for a walk around the ward and hold you and feed you and give your momma some rest,” Cassidy said and laid him in the little bassinette the hospital provided.
“That means you and I have a date with a couple of cigars,” Guy said.
“Are you okay with that?” Weylan asked.
I waved him off. “Yes, of course. Go. Have some guy time.”
Guy chuckled. “I love that one.”
It took me a moment to figure out what he was talking about. When I realized what I had said, I giggled. “Good one, right?”
Guy nodded and headed for the door.
“Be back soon,” Weylan said and kissed me on the top of my head.
“Okay,” I said.
“You get some rest. I’ll be back with the baby soon…” Cassidy’s eyes widened. “What did you name him, anyway?”
“Hastiin,” Weylan said. “Come out with us and I’ll explain why.”
“I hope it’s a good reason,” Cassidy said and winked at me.
I chuckled to myself and watched everyone file out of the room. My eyes grew heavy, and I let them close. A peaceful sleep washed over me.
