Two days later,we headed home as a family for the first time. When I climbed into the truck, I had half-expected to see the stains from childbirth, but someone at the hospital arranged for the truck to be cleaned out for us.
That was really nice of them. Whoever they were.
When we made it home, we tucked little Hastiin into his crib and cuddled up on the couch, and watched a fire as it burned and popped and cracked.
“How are you feeling?” Weylan asked.
I smiled. “Complete.”
He chuckled. “That’s good.”
I had never felt better in my life. And I owed part of that to him. I twisted in the seat and faced him. I smiled as I met his confused gaze and leaned forward to kiss him.
“We can’t have sex yet, babe,” he said.
“I wasn’t wanting sex, silly,” I said and pulled away.
He cocked his head to the side. “What were you wanting then?”
“Just to show you how much I love you and am grateful for you and talking me into giving you another chance,” I said.
He smiled and took my hand into his. “I have something to show you as well.”
“Really?” I asked, getting excited. “What?”
He stuck his hand into the pocket of his jeans and pulled it out, keeping whatever it was out of my sight. I tried to guess what it was, but I couldn’t. Knowing Weylan, it would be something I could never guess in a thousand years.
“What is it?” I asked.
He sat up and knelt on the floor in front of me. He took my left hand into his and presented me with a ring. It was gorgeous. A halo cut, set in silver, all white stones. I wasn’t big on diamonds, but the clarity within the stones themselves made me think that’s what they were.
“Gemma, my mate, my life, you have given me more reasons to live and face each day than I thought was possible. My life has improved, my heart is full, and I never had expected this for myself. You’ve surprised me every day and continue to do so just by loving me. It would be my pleasure and honor to be by your side for the rest of our days. Would you do me the honor of being my wife?”
My vision blurred. I smiled. My heart fluttered in my chest. I nodded. “Yes.”
He slipped the ring on my finger, and I gave him a huge, sloppy kiss.
Then the baby started to cry.
“The fun begins?” Weylan asked.
I nodded. “The fun begins.”
I stood up to attend to Hastiin while Weylan went to make a bottle. I smiled to myself as my hand caught the light twinkling against the stone of my beautiful engagement ring.
Now our lives could truly start. Just the three of us. The career can wait. Hell, if anything, I figured I could use my photography to start taking pictures of my son. My portfolio needed something fresh. Especially since now, I can see through a different lens.
One of a mother’s.
EPILOGUE: SAVANNAH
I climbed out of my squad car and opened the back door as Jacob stepped out and leaned against his door. The shifter in the back seat was kicking and screaming. She hissed at me when I reached in to grab her.
I frowned and narrowed my eyes. “Are you going to make me force you out or are you going to cooperate with me?”
“Don’t touch me!” she snapped.
