Now that the initial shock of his sudden appearance was starting to die down, curiosity was getting the better of me. Also, that certain something pulling me toward him. It was almost like I had something inside me that had no other choice but to gravitate toward him and his proximity.
It was at this point I noticed he was using the reflection in the shop’s window to scope our surroundings. His eyes started to flit around me, and he seemed… distracted for lack of a better word.
His behavior did wonders to my already bruised ego.
Was he embarrassed to be out in public with me?
No. That couldn’t be it. We were in a very public place in Denver back in March. Though Denver was a metropolis. It was easy to blend in with the crowds. Here in the town that he lived in was a different story. There were far less people, and we were very noticeable standing on the street in front of a store.
He was on alert, but from what, I wasn’t sure.
See? Wonders are being done here. I could be reasonable.
He sniffed the air, and I had the sudden urge to walk away slowly. Who did things like that? Also, I had considered I had gotten myself impregnated by a lunatic. Maybe his hesitancy of being involved was a blessing in disguise, allowing me to dodge a bullet. But he came to me this time. Then again, there could be something else entirely going on. Something too far over my head to figure out.
I could be understanding, after all. But I was facing a lot of unknowns in this situation, and it was incredibly off-putting.
I cleared my throat. “You wanna tell me what’s going on?”
He settled his eyes on me and asked, “Have you noticed anything… unusual today?”
“What? You mean besides your behavior right now?” I asked.
He glared at me. “Can you just answer the question?”
I groaned and rolled my eyes. “No. I haven’t. Why in the world would I see anything unusual? Other than you, that is.”
He nodded. “What about strange noises? Anything like that?”
A pinch formed in the center of my forehead as I slowly shook my head from side to side.
“Strange how?” I asked.
“It would mean a lot to me if you just answered the question,” he said, keeping his voice low.
I laughed. “You mean like it was important to me to have you hear me out only to be accused of baby trapping you?”
He sighed. “Have you or not heard any unusual or strange noises around you.”
“No…” I dragged the word out. “Should I have?”
“You haven’t spotted any creatures lurking about?” he asked, looking dead into my eyes.
The guy was serious, and I was starting to really consider having dodged a bullet. He was a cracked pot for sure. So, why did I feel such a strong pull toward him? Was something inside me broken?
I shook the questions from my mind and focused on the answer I needed to give him.
“No. Everything is normal for me,” I said. “Besides, why would I see random creatures in the middle of town?”
“Good,” he said. His shoulders relaxed a little more. He refused to answer my question.
“That doesn’t answer my question,” I said, feeling unjustified in being left in the dark.
He continued looking around, still avoiding my questions. But maybe there was one he would answer that would bring me at least some sort of comfort.
“What is all of this about?” I asked as my shoulders tensed.
He might have felt more comfortable, but I certainly wasn’t. I had to figure out a way to end our weird and unusual conversation and be on my way. Especially since he seemed less than inclined to give me answers.
