“If you continue to force my hand, I will kill you,” he said, firmly.
Tabitha shifted back to her sleek, thin, human form. She gasped from the pain. She took several deep breaths and said, “You might as well just finish me then. Because the second I’m healed, Gemma is dead. Her and that baby.”
He shook his head and walked away from her. Leaving her on the ground, naked and broken.
I stepped out of the trees and headed toward him. “Weylan.”
I kept ahold of my belly as I struggled to move through the underbrush without tripping over something.
Weylan snapped his attention toward me. His eyes held shock until he realized it was me. Then ran to close the gap between us. Once he reached me, his hands cupped both sides of my face and he kissed my forehead. “What are you doing out here? I thought I told you to lock yourself in the bathroom.”
“I was worried,” I said. “I had to make sure you were doing all right.”
“And how are you?” he asked. “Are you okay?”
I chuckled under my breath. He was too much. “I should be asking you that. You were the one in the middle of a bloody fight, after all.”
He shook his head. “Don’t worry about me. I’m fine. I’ll be fine. We heal much faster than humans. Remember?”
I knew that to be true too because the gash that Tabitha had given him in his wolf form was already sealed and appeared much less severe than it was initially. I breathed out a sigh of relief and nodded. I was grateful he wasn’t hurt worse than he had been.
He held me close and kissed the top of my head again. His heart hammered in his chest.
I breathed in deep his scent and let him hold me until his heart slowed down. Once it had, he looked behind him. I followed his line of sight. Tabitha still laid on the ground, breathing through her pain, watching us exchange affection.
In hindsight, that probably did nothing good for us. Judging by her expression, we were adding salt and acid to her already wounded heart. But I wasn’t going to apologize. Especially to her.
“We better get you inside before she heals enough to move again,” Weylan said.
“Does it really happen that quickly?” I asked, worried that the fight wasn’t over completely yet.
“It can.” He shook his head. “With her, it’s best to err on the side of caution.”
He took my hand and helped me walk back to the cabin. It wasn’t a far walk. Not even half a mile.
“You need to call the authorities,” I said. “She’s never going to stop.”
“I know,” he said. “I just need to get you back inside first.”
“I’m fine,” I said and stepped over a thin, knocked over tree trunk.
“I would feel better if we were inside first,” he added.
“Okay, but I am holding you to calling them,” I said and settled my gaze on him.
His jaws clenched. He barely met my gaze and nodded. I couldn’t understand why he was so hesitant to calling the authorities, but I wasn’t going to ask about it now. I would wait for a different time. A better time. Maybe when this was all blown over.
A few minutes later, we were at the door. He pulled out his phone and sighed. “Let’s get you settled first.”
“I’m fine. Call them. Now,” I said and leveled my gaze on him.
He scrolled through his contacts and thumbed the number as we stepped through the door and his call had been answered.

WEYLAN
I got Gemma inside and settled on the couch with some tea. Once I got off the call, I made her some food. She had just gone through an ordeal, and I wanted to make sure she and the baby were okay.
