That had done it. He peeled his eyes open, hopped out of bed, and started rushing around grabbing everything. He even ran out to start the truck up so that it was warm when I climbed into it. Halfway there, my contractions started big time. And then the big flood as my water fully broke less than halfway to the hospital.
I was trying my best to breathe through the contractions, but he was coming fast, and we had no time to stop.
I ended up delivering the baby on the seat of Weylan’s truck, fifteen minutes from the hospital. When we pulled up to the front door, Weylan ran inside to grab a nurse who followed him out with a wheelchair.
After helping me out of the truck and into the wheelchair, I was rushed up to the labor and delivery unit, where the baby and I were checked out and cleaned up. I had never felt a part of me missing until then. I never wanted to feel that again. Ever.
An hour after arriving, my son was brought to me and placed into my arms. The med staff listened to Weylan recount the adventure of me birthing our son on the drive and they couldn’t get enough of it.
But as I stared down at the tiny face, I had never been more relieved things had turned out the way they did. I could never bear to part with the little guy.
He was so beautiful. The universe was looking after this little guy, who so desperately wanted to be born, he broke through all of the precautions we did and brought me and Weylan together.
Weylan took a seat on the edge of the bed after sending the last of the medical staff from the room. He smiled big, staring down at his son.
“What are we going to name him?” he asked.
“I haven’t thought about it,” I said. “Do you have any ideas?”
“Hastiin, after the man who showed me what it means to be what I am. The man who was a father to me,” he said.
I smiled. “It’s perfect.”
“You both are,” Weylan said.
“He’s so perfect in every way,” I said, softly.
“Yes, he is,” Weylan agreed. “I never knew it was possible to feel so much for something so small.”
I giggled under my breath. “He is a miracle.”
“He’s got your nose,” he said.
I smiled. “You think so?”
“I know so,” he said.
I stared at the small nose on his tiny face and wondered what other features he had of mine. All I saw was Weylan in miniature form. “I think he’s all you.”
“We’ll see,” he said.
“This is probably the first time in my life that things are finally going right. Everything is as close to perfect as it’s going to get. I’m going to soak it up,” I said.
“You should. I’m going to join you on that,” he said. “Together.”
“Good. You better,” I said. “I’m told the real fun begins now.”
He chuckled softly. “As long as you are by my side, I can handle it.”
I met his loving gaze and smiled.
It was so strange how he could smile at me in the way he was. I was a wreck and had just come out of the other side of a legendary birth. My insides were still aching and burning, but he seemed to see nothing but beauty.
“Why are you staring at me?” I asked.
He shook his head. “I’m just counting my blessings.”
I smiled. “Why?”
