“Just making some adjustments out here,” he said easily. “I have a few more things to check off my list. I’ll see you inside the house.”

“Okay,” she said with a smile, then accelerated past his truck, leaving a rooster tail of dust behind.

After following her in, he parked and headed toward Brett and Violet’s house. He and the other guys would be getting ready for dinner, and he wanted to talk to them in private.

Five minutes later, he stood in the barn with the four men and explained what Lainey had heard the night before. What he’d found. “We had an intruder last night,” he said. “No idea who it was, but someone came visiting in the middle of the night. Someone who was probably also at that compound. Phoebe heard someone walking around, but never saw anyone. Maybe this is about her. Maybe she saw something shady but didn’t understand the significance.”

He clenched his fists. Relaxed them. He needed a cool, clear head. Anger wasn’t going to solve this problem. “That girl’s been through enough. I don’t want her endangered while she’s staying here, so I’ve fortified the gate and put in more motion sensors.” He let his gaze drift over all of them. “But I think we need more. I’d like us all to take turns patrolling the area around the house and the barn. If we each take a couple of hours a night, we’ll have someone watching and the rest of us can get some sleep.”

Brett nodded slowly. “Good plan, Brody. I’ll set up a schedule and we’ll start tonight.” His jaw clenched. “Whatcha want us to do if we catch the son of a bitch?”

“Call the sheriff. But I’ll have a few questions for the bastard first.”
