“I was just telling your father that she is free to be discharged, and she can see her regular GP in a week.”

“Thank you, doctor.” He nods at me and walks away.

I turn back to my father. “Who the fuck is giving Mum sedatives? Because we both know it sure as shit isn’t her taking them.”

“It’s just a mild sedative, she has been on edge, and you know how stubborn she is.”

“That’s her fucking choice, not yours.” I snap, losing my temper.

“Lower your voice, boy, she is my wife, and you keep your damn mouth shut. This doesn’t concern you.”

I shake my head, now isn’t the time to argue with him, not when I’m so close to him being gone.

“Fine, at least lower her dose so you don’t kill her. Because if anything were to happen to her…”

“You’ll what?”

“You would be surprised at what I’m capable of, old man. After all, I have learned from the best.”

I dismiss him and go back into the room where Mum is, she smiles at me as I enter. “Good news, you’re allowed home.”

My father walks in just behind me. “The doctor will chase up your lab reports, I explained why they can’t be right.”

“I must have overdone myself and fainted. I was painting the upstairs rooms.”

That’s the thing with my mum, she could easily hire someone to do it for her, but she refuses, saying that she is more than capable of doing it herself.

“I have to get back to the office, I’m sure Diesel can take you home and make sure you’re okay. I will send a nurse to check on you later in the afternoon.”

I watch him lean over and kiss her. “It’s fine, I will see you tonight.”

“I will be in late, so don’t wait up.”

I roll my eyes, he is working late, my ass, and the worst part is that my mum knows and doesn’t say anything. Could everything I thought about their marriage be a lie? As my mum sits on the bed holding back tears, I wait for my father to leave before I move in closer to her bed and take her hand.

“Don’t worry, this will all be over soon.”

“It will never be over, he…”

“Trust me. How about I go and chase up the nurse with your discharge papers and Cyrus and I can take you home?” Her eyes light up, and she beams a huge smile at me.

“You made up,” I nod. “I really like her a lot, she is good for you.”

“I really like her.”

“I won’t let him ruin it.”

A knock at the door has both myself and Mum looking behind us. Emory stands at the door. “The nurse gave me these and said we could come back.”

“Emory Briar, you didn’t bribe a nurse to get back here,” my mother chastises.

“I would do no such thing! Stoop to my brother's level. I politely asked if there was an update and possibly slipped her my number.”

“You’re supposed to be watching Cyrus,” I growl.

“Don’t have kittens, she is right here.” Emory steps inside the door, and Cyrus moves past him and comes to stand beside me.

“Cyrus, it’s so nice to see you.”
