“Isn’t there someone you can ask about this?”
Mathew came to mind. I was sure he might know something. He practically raised the Cross siblings. And he had looked at me… I shook away the thought. There wasn’t any way for him to know me. It was silly to even entertain the idea, but what if he did know something about the situation?
“Yeah. There’s someone.”
“Well, there you go. Start there and see where it goes. And if you want someone to be there with you, just remember I’m always available.”
“Thanks, Olivia. For being my friend. I didn’t have any before, but I’m glad I made one out of you.”
She patted my hand. “We always need at least one good friend in life. Now I have two. I can’t wait for you to meet Lizzie.”
“Lizzie?”
“She’s been my best friend since middle school. She lives in California now with her husband, Sam, and their adorable little four-year-old boy.” Olivia sounded almost sad.
“You miss her,” I said. I didn’t need to know Olivia well to see that.
She offered a small smile. “Aside from Max, Mason’s brother, Lizzie had been my rock for the longest time. But then Sam got accepted to medical school at UCLA and he moved his family there. Yeah, I really, really miss her. But she promised to come back here in time for me to give birth to this one, so that’s a plus.”
“That’s great, Olivia. I can’t wait to meet her.”
She brightened at that. “Just you see, we’re all going to be really good friends.”
I smiled but didn’t say anything, taking a small sip of my coffee. Olivia was a dreamer, that much was obvious. It was refreshing to hang out with someone so different from me. It was refreshing to hang out with someone who wasn’t such a cynic, period.
And I believed her. We would all be friends.
God, now I sounded just like her.
