I didn’t want the rug to be pulled out from under me when everything was going well, and that just pissed me off more than anything.

With a tired sigh, I climbed out the car and slammed the door shut harder than I meant to. Then I made my way up the apartment, half-fuming and half-apprehensive.

The place was quiet when I got in, but I knew Logan was home. After all, I saw his car parked in the underground lot. He was either in our room or his office, the rooms he spent most of his time in, and sure enough, I found him in his office, poring over some legal documents spread out on his desk.

He looked up when he heard me, his eyes moving to the clock. “Hayden. What are you doing home? Is everything okay?”

He walked over to me with the sort of gentleness that could only be present in the man who loved you. I frowned at him instead.

“What are you hiding from me?” I asked. His concerned expression smoothed away with a mask, and I knew I’d guessed correctly. “Why do I get this feeling that we’ve met before? That Veena and I have met before? Why does Mathew act so strangely around me?”

I tried to read his expression, but it was hard to tell what he was thinking or feeling. He had his lawyer face on, something I had never seen expressed toward me.

It was unnerving.

“Logan?”

“Baby, why don’t you sit down?” He directed me to one of the two recliners in his office, so I took a seat and watched as he paced across the room. The only indication that he was nervous about what he was going to tell me was the way he threaded his fingers through his hair.

He really, really needed that haircut now.

I didn’t think he’d gotten a haircut since we met.

“Just tell me,” I said softly.

And please, don’t let this break me, I didn’t say, but thought all the same.

“Do you remember anything about your life before your mom moved you guys to Humboldt Park?”

I frowned. I was sure I never told him where my mom and I had lived when she was alive. “H-How did you know we used to live in Humboldt?”

“That’s not important. Please just answer the question.”

“That’s not important? Are you crazy?”

I stood up and moved toward the door. Had he been stalking me? Did I fall in love with my stalker? Oh, God. Just how well did I know Logan?

To think I gave up my apartment for him…

I was a stupid girl.

What the hell had I been thinking?!

“Hayden, calm down.”

“Calm down? Do you really expect me to calm down right now?”

“Yes. Let me explain.”

“Explain what?”

He made a move to grab me, but I moved back and held up my hand. “Don’t touch me!” I hissed.

He pulled up short, his hands lying limply by his side. “Hayden. You know I would never hurt you, right?”

“How should I know that? Were you lying to me all this time?”

“Please, just let me explain. Okay? Please.”
