“Right,” Elliot said, taking the last bite of his sandwich. He chewed as he looked back at us, not wanting to be left out of the conversation, and wiped his hands on his shirt. Jensen ruffled his hair, which earned him a mini glare from Elliot.

I smiled softly at the sight.

It always made me happy to see anyone dote on Elliot. I hoped it would be enough to make up for his own mother’s shortcomings.

Although to call Camila’s behavior and attitude toward Elliot a ‘shortcoming’ was being generous.

Elliot hopped off the barstool when he was done and walked over to me, holding out his hand. “All done, Evelyn.”

I took his hand in mine and turned to Jace. “Why don’t I get him cleaned up and you and Jensen can chat?”

Jace nodded, his eyes light. I didn’t think I had ever seen him look like this—so carefree. He almost looked his age. I knew Jace was in his mid-thirties, but sometimes he acted like he was older than that, never really setting aside any time to himself for pleasure. And I was blushing again.

Jace shot me an inquisitive look, which I ignored. “Alright. But come back as soon as you’re done.”

“Okay,” I said softly and quickly walked out of there. It wasn’t until I was halfway through washing Elliot’s hands that I realized Jace never said why he wanted me to come back, and when I thought about it, it sounded like Jace wanted me there. To get to know his friend and to be there not as Elliot’s nanny, but as… Jace’s girlfriend?
