He flinched at that, and I didn’t have it in me to feel regret about it. “This isn’t fate. Our first meeting, our entire relationship, had been orchestrated by you. It was you who sought me out, and you who decided to bring me on as Elliot’s nanny, and I still don’t know why. To be cruel?”
“Evelyn.”
I shook my head. “This isn’t fate’s plan. It’s yours.”
“Evelyn. Please, just listen to me—”
“Listen to you? Now? Now you want me to listen to you? How about all those nights when you held me in your arms. When you could have told me the little boy I had been missing was right in front of me? How about that first time you dropped hints that you wanted to spend your future with me? How about before you made me fucking fall in love with you?” I choked on the last words, and I knew I needed to get out of there for real this time. I was getting close to breaking down, and I didn’t want to show Jace any more of my soft spots.
I didn’t say anything else. I grabbed my purse and ran out of there. I didn’t know where I was going or what I was doing, only that I needed to get away from him.
And Jace let me go.
