“Who?” Elliot asked softly, though he was looking at me so I thought he might have known.

Jace pointed at me. “Elliot, this is Evelyn. Can you say hi?”

Elliot met my eyes before looking away, hiding part of his face in his dad’s chest. “Hi,” he said so softly I almost didn’t hear. I adopted the same tone as him, though a little louder so he could hear me.

“Hi, Elliot. How are you?”

He didn’t answer me. He buried his face fully into his dad’s chest.

I looked at Jace and offered a small smile. “Elliot is a little shy. Don’t worry, once he gets to know you, you won’t be able to get him to quiet down.”

My smile widened. “I look forward to that day.”

“Good.”

Jace stood up with Elliot in his arms, who proceeded to wrap his small arms around his dad’s neck.

I stood up, too.

“My assistant will contact you about the details for tomorrow. I’ll see you then.”

I nodded and took the outstretched hand he held out to me.

That was it. I was getting the job. And I was moving away to a different city, a different state, in just two weeks. Aside from a family vacation, I had never left Massachusetts before.

It was both exciting and scary, all at once.

I couldn’t believe he was offering me the job—but I wasn’t going to question it.

“Thank you, Jace. For the opportunity. I won’t let you down.”

Jace acknowledged what I said with a curt nod, before he walked away. I stared at them, not sure why my heart was still beating so fast.

This had to be a good thing, right?

God, I hoped so.
