I turned the page and ignored the way Jace leaned forward to look at the words. We were touching, and I was feeling… too much.
Reading that book to Elliot with Jace was the longest five minutes of my life, and by the time we were done, Elliot’s eyes were drooping, but he wasn’t asleep yet.
“Daddy?”
“Yeah?”
“I love you.”
“I love you, too, Elliot.”
He let out a sigh. “I know.”
And then he drifted off to sleep.
We both stood at the same time. I avoided Jace’s eyes and leaned down to tuck the blanket in around Elliot some more, playing with his soft hair.
I could feel Jace's eyes on me, and I braced myself when I finally turned to look at him.
“You really love him, don’t you?” he asked me.
“Yes. I know you’re going to say I’m stupid for getting so attached.”
He shrugged. “I would much prefer a nanny who loved my son and takes care of him well than an indifferent one any day.”
