Chapter 38

If anyone was capable of sending a life-altering text while someone was ten-thousand feet up in the sky with no ability to see it, it was Hope.

He could have seen it, if he were connected to the flight’s Wi-Fi, but since political advisors’ phones were extra protected, he never connected to those networks. Yet another reason to shed the title that was bearing on his soul for too long.

Nevertheless, there was nothing like deplaning from a red-eye flight, only to be sparked back to life again.

Hannah’s smiling face next to him in the picture preceded a text message.

“She missed you. I did, too.Would anybody take a bite out of the Capitol Dome if it was wrapped as candy?”

He understood perfectly well what she had done. She had let him know that she was willing to try and left him to make his decision under the condition he could stick to it. The funny thing was that there was a doubt in her mind, while there was none in his.

“You know I miss you, too. You just have no idea how much. And if anyone can make anything look like candy, it’s Naomi.”

He knew they weren’t talking only of the girls but understood why she had put them front and center.

Because he was sometimes paid to put words together in a compelling way, he knew how changeable words were, how fluid, how they could be manipulated. He didn’t put much stock into words. He preferred actions. There was no point in saying pretty things if he wasn’t there with her to back them up.

He texted three more words then began taking the necessary steps that would make her understand that she was his end game.

“I’ll be there.”
