“How’s it a problem? He already knows you don’t remember your past, but loves you anyway. He probably already thought everything through before proposing.”

“He might not have imagined the kind of things I could’ve done.”

“Meh. Everyone’s done something stupid they regret later. Tony isn’t perfect as you think. Neither am I.” She comes over to the couch and sits next to me. “Look, Iris, do you remember how I said my parents are planning to marry me off in a merger?”

I nod.

“Even though I hate the whole plan, a small part of me knows it’s probably better that way.”

I stare at her, utterly flabbergasted. Just what century is she living in? “You do? Why?” Yuna is so beautiful and smart. She should settle for nothing less than love.

“Because I’ll never know if a man wants me for me—Yuna Hae—or as the only daughter of Chairman Hae. But you… You know exactly what Tony wants. He’ll never care what’s in your past.”

Not even killing a girl? The words shoot up all the way to my tongue, but I click my teeth shut. I drink more from the bottle. “Do you think love never changes?”

“No,” she says. “But the kind of love between you and Tony? That won’t ever change.”

How can she be so sure? I’m feeling a little dizzy. The room’s not spinning, exactly, but my body doesn’t feel super steady either. “How do you know?”

“He looks at you like you’re the only thing worth getting up for in the morning. Love like that doesn’t change. If I hadn’t seen that on his face, I would’ve never agreed to— I would’ve never let him come near you.”

It’s too much effort to stay upright. I lower my head until it hits the couch cushion. “Yuna?”

“Mmm?”

“Can you tell me stories from those years ago? When you knew me at Curtis? Good, bad, ugly, whatever. Everything.”

“Of course.”

Yuna starts, her voice soft and gentle. I close my eyes, willing my brain to soak everything in.
