“Yes, Avery.”
“This is really one of my best works. I’m so proud of myself.” She nods.
I’m almost tempted to pat her back. Or just hug her and squeeze until the wedding. The woman is pure magic.
When she’s finished, I change out of the wedding finery. The process takes as much time and energy as putting it on did. Although my maxi dress is fine, somehow getting the magical dress off makes me feel like Cinderella after the ball. Except when the wedding’s over, I won’t be going back home alone. I’ll be starting my life with Tony.
Mrs. Min is just wrapping up her conversation when I come out of the dressing room with Yuna and Julie.
“I’m so happy it came out perfectly. You’re going to make Tony’s heart stop,” Mrs. Min says.
I flush with happy anticipation.
“I wish I could be there to see it,” Avery says. “I expect pictures.”
“Of course,” I say. I’m sure there will be thousands of photos.
Julie’s phone rings, and she answers it, walking to a corner. Suddenly, she says, “What? No! Ugh. I’d rather swallow a cockroach.”
I turn to her, noting the tense anger in her eyes. “Is everything okay?”
“No. Ugh.” Julie’s red in the face, her expression a perfect definition of “insulted.” “That was Byron.”
I haven’t spoken to him since the night I went to Julie’s to pick up my suitcase. Did something happen? A tiny bit of guilt wriggles inside me, reminding me I haven’t kept up with him at all. “Is he all right?”
“He’s lost his mind. He called to ask if I’m dating Marty.”
“What?” I blink at her, flabbergasted. “Why would he think that?” He should know his baby sister’s too smart to date a mansplaining jerk like Marty.
“I know, right? He’s gone insane.”
“And then what did he say?”
“‘I thought so.’” She bares her teeth. “If he thought that, why did he call?”
I shake my head. It’s positively bizarre. Byron doesn’t make idle calls, and he isn’t the type to speculate about his sister’s personal life. What on earth could have made him do it?
