“You were angry and hurt. People lash out over less.”
“Yeah… Still, this feels different.”
Like the kind of dead silence full of that ozone smell before the sky erupts in storm.I pull out my phone. She has multiple numbers now because she had to get so many new ones after I kept blocking her. Biting my lip, I try texting her again on all those numbers. Unlike before, none of my texts gets delivered this time. It’s as though the universe is returning the favor. Take that and see how it feels, Ivy!
“Do you have her latest number?” I ask after explaining what’s going on.
Tony shakes his head. “I only have the one from when she first arrived.”
I already tried that, and that hasn’t gotten me a response. “Do you think it’s all right if we go to her hotel?”
“After you’re fed. You don’t want to pass out at her feet, do you?”
“Ha. No.” Given how we parted, I doubt Mr. Kim would catch me if I did.
It might be a good idea to give her some space, but I can’t. The near miss with the killer on Saturday left a mark. And I can’t let the last memory of our interaction be ugly words and fighting. I want to fix that ASAP, apologize for what I said and tell her to be careful. In person, since my texts apparently haven’t made an impression.
Our dinner arrives soon after we’re home. I manage to have three spring rolls, a small bowl of the soup and some fried rice with duck. Tony polishes off everything else in a massive, Hoover-like display of consumption.
Some food in my belly immediately makes me feel human again. I stretch my legs.
“Wow. I’m feeling so much better.”
“Bet you do. If Mother ever visits you again, don’t let her bother you. It’s actually better if you tell her to see me.”
“Do you think she’ll come by again?” I ask, tensing a bit. It’s impossible to imagine what other poison she’ll throw at me.
“I don’t know…”
He trails off as his phone buzzes. He checks it and curses under his breath.
“Something at the office?”
“No. It’s Yuna.”
Cold dread congeals the food in my gut. “What happened?”
“She’s leaving the country. Right now.”
