Chapter Twenty-Six

Anthony

Just as I’m about to head out to pick up Ivy from work, Wei walks into my office.

“Your penthouse is cleaned and ready. I swept it for bugs, but there was nothing. New locks just got installed to a biometric reader. Your info is in the system.”

“Thank you,” I say, satisfied the work was done on time. A team came by earlier to take my fingerprints.

“Boss, you think Ivy would want to get a new place?”

“I don’t know. Maybe.”

She didn’t say anything about the break-in this morning. Just pasted on a determined smile and told me she was fine. During breakfast, she and Yuna chatted normally over coffee.

But is she really okay?

I wish I could read her mind, figure out how I could make it better for her. It can’t be good for her to live with fear…the need to look over her shoulder all the time. When I get my hands on whoever’s behind this…

I clench my fingers, wishing his neck were within my grip.

“I’ll let you know if we need another hotel reservation,” I say.

“Certainly. Have a good evening.”

“You too.” I manage a smile. It isn’t Wei’s fault there’s broken glass churning in my gut.

The second I hop into the Cullinan, TJ starts toward the Pryce Family Foundation. “Thought about stuff,” he says.

I glance over. For TJ, this is practically an outburst. “Go on.”

“That mugging. Don’t think it’s the same fucker who tried to kill you last weekend.” He nods to himself. “Should make you feel better.”

“It doesn’t make me feel any better to know there are two guys after Ivy.” One is already too many. Two… I don’t even want to think about it.

TJ cocks an eyebrow. “This one wasn’t trying to hurt her. He didn’t steal shit.”

Is he being dense on purpose?I don’t give a shit about things. “He could’ve poisoned her!”

“There are easier ways. Bobbi says they were apart for maybe three seconds during the mugging. Enough time to stick a knife in.”

Fear clutches my heart again. “And? You’re saying that’s what he should’ve done?”

“If he wanted her dead? Makes more sense.”

Jesus. I run a hand over my face. He’s right, of course. You don’t need more than a second to kill someone. I should know. Pulling the trigger only took a fraction of a second eighteen years ago.

“But he didn’t. Just stole her purse. Sent some guy to rob you, except the guy didn’t take shit. What does that tell you?”

“I don’t know,” I say, too tired to think it through.

“Whatever he wants, Ivy’s life isn’t it.”

Small comfort. He might not want her life, but he’s terrorizing her. “But she’s still a target.”

“Like I said, two people. After Ivy for very different reasons. Or maybe the robbery is about you.”

“Me?” I have my share of enemies, but none of them crazy enough to try breaking and entering.
