I shook my head, dislodging Jett’s hand. “I can’t.”

He sighed and took a step backwards. “I’m here when you’re ready.”

Tears pricked the back of my eyes. Why was he being so nice? He seemed genuine. Was it all just a ploy? Or could I trust him?

“Come on, I’ve got something to show you.”

He walked over and shut the window, locking it, before exiting the room without a backwards glance. He didn’t wait for me to follow.

“Wait up! It’s a rabbit warren in here!”

“You seem to be able to find your way around well enough.” He disappeared around a corner, and by the time I got there he was nowhere to be seen.

Well, wasn’t that just dandy. All traces of warm and fuzzy disappeared.

I glanced back over my shoulder, considering whether to go back for another crack at the safe. But there was no point. Jett would check, especially now that he’d caught me red handed.

Maybe I should let him in, let him help? It’s not like he’d ever actually done anything to me. He was a few years above me at school, which was why I knew him, but I’d always assumed he never knew me. He’d been popular, and if I’d kept any more of a low profile I would have disappeared altogether. I was that weird goth chick who liked to fight, and everyone kept their distance. Which was how I liked it. I never got lonely. I had my mom and Aunt Joey.

Yeah, right. A best friend would have been nice, every once in a while, but I’d convinced myself that I was a loner through and through.

And I couldn’t forget about his understanding with the Fae. No, there was just as much chance he’d turn me over as help me, especially if he knew what I was trying to do. Pretty sure that sneaking into Faerie Land and stealing back my sister would be a no-go. He’d probably want me to find my father too. As if.

Nope, Mom was right. Never trust a man.

I hurried down the corridor chasing Jett, wondering what he wanted me to see. A feeling of foreboding filled me. Whatever was, it couldn’t be good.
