“What they say is true,” Mother confirmed. “Griselda wanted you to fail from the beginning. She’s known about your long-standing friendship with Edan, and that is why she tasked you with Princess Hadley’s wish.” She paused and pulled me into a tight embrace. “I am so sorry, my precious girl. This was all the guild’s doing. They wanted you gone because of me. And who better to sabotage you than the one who ruined you?”

“Oh, Mother. I forgive you, but you must forgive yourself. It’s the only way to move past this—”

I was cut off by a guttural scream. It was Griselda. Crap on crackers.

Four more wands had broken, and the townspeople had seen Griselda for who she truly was.

“I’ve had quite enough.” King Fredrick nodded toward his guards. “Take Griselda into custody, and I shall make a formal inquiry into the rest of the guild, along with the council. I need to know if they have been complicit in the unsanctioned magic and the memory swipes.”

“Thank you, Frederick.” My mother kissed his bearded cheek, and I thought I might faint. I hadn’t seen my “actual” mother in so long, that seeing the “real” her and not the evil version was…surreal.

Edan clasped my hand. “Would you like to clear the room with the exception of family and friends and get married now?”

I glanced at the king with a hopeful expression.

“Guards!”
