“And how am I supposed to do that?”
“By taking Tucker to the lake house with me this weekend.”
She hadn’t set foot in that house since before they separated and the thought of going back… the thought of seeing their happy place again when they were anything but, left her hollowed out.
“Tucker needs to be where he can rest,” she said shamelessly using the dog as an excuse to avoid the one place in the world that wouldn’t let her retreat into safety.
“Tucker needs an adventure.” He took a step toward her, the heat of his body washing over. “And so do you,” he said quietly reaching out to trace his finger over cheekbone.
She took a step back. God, if he touched her just one second longer, she’d break. Moments still washed over her where she wanted nothing more than to sink into the warmth of Jack’s arms. But those days were long gone, buried under resentment and piles of paperwork between two law firms.
“I don’t know,” she said.
“Listen, if he’s that bad off, I want to spend some time with him, but I’m not taking him away from you to do it. It’s just a couple days. Do it for Tucker.”
