“God, Meg, I’ve missed you so damn much.” The words tore from his chest in a rough pain-filled whisper.
Tears filled her throat as pain sliced through her. “I’ve needed you with me.” She never meant to say it, but the admission fell from her lips. She sagged with the burden that fell from her shoulders with it.
She’d been strong, to where she’d unyielding and froze the one person closest to her who could understand her pain, the only person who had lived it right alongside her.
She’d shut out her husband and her marriage and for what? So, she wouldn’t have to feel anymore?
Impossible.
She had one shot at this life, going through it numb and alone wasn’t the answer.
If anything, curling into his warmth, the light scent of his woodsy cologne comforting her was proof of that.
“I know. I’m sorry. I never should have left you alone. I’ll never leave you alone again, Meg. Not for anything.”
She curled her fingers into his shirt holding on with everything she had. “I love you, Jack,” she whispered as a torrent of tears broke free.
She caught Tucker’s eyes from the corner and she’d swear their pup smiled. With a sigh, he rested his head on his paws and watched them, his eyes slowly drifting shut.
Jack cupped her cheeks and tipped her face up to his. He kissed her tear stained skin, each brush of his lips soothing a mountain of pain. “You said this place was meant for a family. We are a family. Even if it’s just the two of us, you’re the family I chose, Meg. The one I choose over and over again. No matter what.”
