“Yeah, I dread it, but I think you’re right. I think we owe it to ourselves and those we’re grieving to see it through.

“Besides…” He stood up and held his hand out for me. “One good thing has already come out of it.”

I took his outstretched hand, and he pulled me up. “Oh yeah? What’s that?”

“I met you.” His eyes bore into mine as I stood mere inches from him.

I bit my lip and broke eye contact as my mind flashed back to what Victoria had said, and I had to ask. “Are you sure you’re okay being seen with me?”

His brow furrowed in confusion. “What do you mean?”

“If we ran into your cool friends or your family, you wouldn’t be embarrassed to be hanging out with someone like me?” I giggled nervously, pretending like I was joking.

Daniel rolled his eyes and started walking. “Don’t be weird.”

My heart sank a little. Maybe Vee was right.
