Marco’s eyes traced over her as he looked back up. “You guys have it handled?”
“We got it.” Henry squeezed his shoulder and I looked down at her as Marco took off his shoes and sat down.
“You good?” I asked Marco, he nodded.
I kissed her forehead and walked out of the room, closing it slightly. As I neared the stairs, I pulled on a jacket then ran a hand through my hair. My eyes narrowed at the cars attempting to pull into our driveway while others tried to pull out. Atlas and his security members stepped outside causing some of the cars to increase their exit. Honestly, it creeped me out a bit to have this many eyes on the property, but not enough to sacrifice her safety.
As I stepped outside, my eyes traced the eager and almost desperate expressions on their faces. What was it about Maya that made humans act so irrational? I mean really it seemed to be a pattern if you think about it...Becky Ash, her parents, Jed, and the media. Seemed odd to me. I stepped up next to Henry and voiced my opinion as his eyebrows went up.
“I wish I knew more about phoenix lore,” he muttered, “but that is an odd pattern. I wonder if Croy would—”
“What would I do?” The man in question asked walking through the front door, looking as though he hadn’t slept either. I was always envious that the twins could pass out so easily. It didn’t matter the situation, if they wanted to fall asleep they would.
I explained the pattern I noticed and Croy’s eyebrows shot up, his eyes scoping out the eager humans being practically herded from the property. Luckily, the team that Atlas had watching the property were all supernatural of some kind. Although Moretti Security Co. did hire humans, it just wasn’t as often. I was glad there were no extra humans around right now considering our possible new discovery.
“It would make sense why they are so overly focused on her in the media,” Croy muttered, “it’s hard because most phoenix lore revolves around the cults and their fixation on them. Of course, widespread media is fairly new, so for all we know the effect has always been there. We could even go as far to assume that the cults were formed after finding out about them and the hold they have, causing that irrational type of behavior.”
I could practically see Henry’s mind working as the two of them continued to talk, I zoned out after a few minutes. I mean I’d come up with the damn concept, that was enough work right? I hoped so because even my energy was drained right now. All I wanted was a beach, Maya in a tiny bikini, and a beer. Life shouldn’t be more god damn complicated than that.
“What did I fucking say?” Henry pointed at a black sedan that pulled through the mess of news trucks. I felt a growl build up in my throat at seeing the FBI agents looking secretly thrilled about this opportunity. We couldn’t exactly kill them with all those damn cameras.
“This is turning into the longest fucking day,” Croy muttered.
You could say that fucking again.
