Cat
Cat was still tryingto catch her breath since that scorching kiss with Repo. Her mind was still reeling over the fact that he admitted that he wanted her. It had been two very long weeks of him denying her and leaving her half-crazy with lust. Now, all she had to do was promise him that she’d stop trying to run and she could have the man who made her want things she never thought she would. She could do that—not run. Sure, she was built to take off at the first sign of trouble but she wasn’t about to break her promise to Repo. Not after he was so honest with her—she owed him at least that.
“You sure you’re up for a quick trip into Savage Hell?” he asked. “I know it’s been a long day for you.” She wanted to tell him that she was ready to go back to his apartment and pick up where their kiss left off but she had a feeling that tonight was important to Repo. Plus, she had to admit that she was curious about his MC and the men that he called back home to talk to daily. They seemed more like Repo’s family and from the little bit that he had shared about himself—he didn’t have much family. He seemed to be just as alone in the world as she was and that thought made her heart hurt for him.
“No, I’d like to see where your club meets,” she said. “It will be nice to see that side of your life,” she admitted.
“It’s not a big deal,” Repo said, shrugging. “I mean, the guys are all great but it’s just a club.” She knew he was playing off how important the men in his MC were to him. It seemed that every step forward they took, he pushed her back two steps.
“You don’t have to hide how important they are to you, Repo. You call home every day to talk to them and I can tell that they mean something to you. Is that so bad?” she asked.
“The guys are great,” Repo defended. “I just don’t go and get all mushy about shit,” he admitted.
Cat giggled and shook her head, “You’re a puzzle, Repo,” she said.
“Well,” he breathed reaching across the console of his truck to pull her hand into his own. “I’ll let you put the pieces together later if you play your cards right,” he teased. Cat knew that he was expecting a response but she honestly had none. She wasn’t sure how to respond to his outrageous remarks. They were such a one-eighty from how he had been treating her and she wasn’t sure that rushing things between them was the answer either.
“We should take things slow,” she said. Repo immediately pulled his hand free from hers and she worried that she had said the wrong thing. “This is just so confusing to me, Repo. I mean, you just spent the past two weeks pushing me away and making me feel like you hated me, most days. Hell, I was sure that you couldn’t wait to be rid of me and now, all of the sudden today, you want me—just like that?” she questioned.
“Yeah,” he breathed. “Just like that, Cat. I fought wanting you because I was following my damn rules. I tried to treat you like a job and ignore the way you made me feel. Hell, you drove me crazy and I didn’t have a fucking clue what to do about it all,” Repo said.
“What changed?” she asked.
Repo shrugged, “Don’t know, really,” he admitted. “I guess I’m just done denying what I want. I want you, Cat.” She silently watched the landscape pass by her passenger window and he reached back across the console and took her hand into his again. “Still want to take things slowly?” he asked.
“Truth?” she asked.
“Truth,” he agreed.
“The idea of you and me scares the shit out of me, Repo. In my line of work, I don’t let myself get attached—you know occupational hazards and all that. I keep my clients at arms-length and that works for me,” she said. Cat learned long ago to never get involved with her clients. It kept her safe. It helped her to stay sane and find a way to wake up every morning and live with her decisions from the night before.
“I’m not one of your fucking clients,” Repo spat. “Is that all you’re looking for here, Cat? Are you still hoping to pay me back for your bail bond and then what—just walk away from me?” His accusation felt like a slap and all she could do was stutter her denials.
“It’s not like that, Repo. Not anymore,” she admitted. “When we first met, I was desperate to run. Hell, I made you that offer because I was hoping to get rid of you so that I could take off. If you had your payment, I’d be able to leave in good conscious.”
“I knew you were going to run, Cat,” he accused.
She held up her hand effectively stopping his next words. “Let me finish Repo,” she insisted. He nodded and she took a deep breath. “But then you took me in and gave me a place to stay. I wasn’t sure how to respond to such kindness. No one had ever done anything like that for me,” she whispered. Cat looked out her window again trying to get her emotions under control. Repo pulled into a parking lot and parked behind a bar she assumed was Savage Hell. He cut the engine and turned to her giving Cat his full attention. She wasn’t sure she’d be able to finish what she needed to say with him watching her. It was hard enough to get it all out with him paying attention to his driving.
“I wanted to believe that you cared. Hell, I was so desperate to think that you wanted me—you know, really wanted me. But then when I practically threw myself at you and you turned me down, time after time, I gave up hope. I thought today was going to be our last day together, Repo. I wrapped my brain around the fact that I was going to walk out of that courthouse alone or worse-I'd end up in prison. But, I never thought that I’d walk out of that place with you by my side or sitting here holding my hand telling me that you want me. So, yeah—I was going to run but I made you a promise, Repo, and I’m not going anywhere. You’re just going to have to give my mind a minute to catch up to where my heart’s been for a couple of weeks now.”
Repo pulled her hand up to his mouth and turned it over, gently pressing his lips to her palm and it was the sweetest fucking gesture she’d ever experienced. “I can take this as slowly as you need, Honey,” Repo said. “Go ahead and do all the catching up you need and I’ll be right here. I’m not sorry about the way things turned out. I wish this could be over for you but I’m so damn thankful for this second chance.”
“Really?” she questioned.
“Yes, really,” he said. “I acted like an ass earlier today. Hell, I’ve been acting like an ass for the past two weeks. I wanted you since the first time I saw you but I let my stupid, self-imposed rules get in the way. I was worried that once today was over I’d be watching you walk away from me and that thought had me crazy. It’s why I insisted we spend last night at my cabin—I wanted more time with you and now I have it.”
“Sure, until they find another lawyer for me and call me back into court. You know this could all still end with me ending up in prison, right?” she asked.
“Use the lawyer I found for you,” he said. “The one you told me you couldn’t use because you’d feel that you owe me again. He said he’d be able to get you community service and no jail time.” The idea of getting no jail time was a dream and she didn’t want to let herself hope for that.
“What happens if he can’t get me off?” she asked.
“Let him at least try, Cat. If not for yourself then for me,” he begged. How could she refuse him when he looked at her the way he was?
“All right,” she agreed. “But I’m going to pay you back,” she insisted.
“No, you won’t,” Repo said.
