Grady had wondered if that was the reason that Connor had quit. He was a smart kid and had to know that Chrissy was struggling. He’d actually gone to Reynolds to take care of Connor’s fees and that’s when he’d been asked to coach. He figured it would be good for him to keep an eye on the kid.

“Not a dime,” Grady confirmed.

“Are you gonna do it?”

Grady could feel the excitement radiating off the kid. “I’m not gonna coach if you’re not gonna pl—”

“I’ll play!”

“Then I guess I’ll be coaching.”

“Yes!” Connor jumped up from his chair. “I’m gonna go tell the guys.”

Connor ran past him out of his room. Grady followed behind him and found Chrissy standing at the end of the hall. From her face, he could see that she’d heard everything.

“Hey, Mom!” Connor yelled as he ran by her and down the stairs. “I’m going to Chad’s.”

Chrissy’s eyes were filled with tears as she silently mouthed to Grady, “Thank you.”

He should be the one thanking her. He’d needed someone to remove his head from his stubborn ass, and who better to tell him he was being an idiot than his sister?
