He gives me a pointed look. “Work.”
Right… So he’s not letting me in. I keep forgetting myself. I’m not a part of their unit. I’m just another nameless face who works for them.
“Cool, cool.” I sound offended, but shit, I am. “What area do you want me to work on while you’re gone?”
He looks confused for a minute.
I point to myself. “Maid, remember?”
“Right,” he says, sighing. “You can clean the library for now.”
“Sounds good.” I finish eating my sandwich, ignoring the way he watches me like I’m a viper about to strike. Once I’m done, I get up to clean the plate, but he holds out his hand.
“Here. Let me.”
I bring my eyebrows together. “I’m the one who’s supposed to clean.”
Yanking his hand back, he nods. “Of course.” His eyes track my movements as I come around the counter and stand next to him at the sink, turning on the faucet.
I side eye him. “So where’s the rest of the pack?”
“We’re the only ones who live here. Why do you want to know about the rest of the pack?”
“Um, I guess I don’t.” I rinse off the suds and set the plate in the drying rack. “Thanks for the sandwich.”
Since he doesn’t seem to be in the mood to talk or to share any information, I leave and head to my room, hating the heavy weight of his attention pressing down on me. I glance over my shoulder when I reach the top of the stairs, pausing and studying him standing at the base.
“What?” I ask. The sharpness in my tone makes his head rear back.
“Nothing.” He frowns. “You can start cleaning tomorrow.”
“Sounds like a dream,” I say dryly then go to my room. I may or may not slam my door like a petulant child. I don’t understand him. I don’t understand the situation. He made me a sandwich, but then didn’t want to talk to me at all. Was he only ensuring I didn’t die or did hewantto take care of me? Those are two distinctly different things. One is a hell of a lot safer than the other.
ChapterFive
MARCO
The door to our hidden office snicks shut and Lucas storms around his desk. Cory and I exchange smirks from the seats on the other side, knowing exactly who pissed him off.
“How’s our new ward doing?” Cory asks.
Lucas glares at him. “She’s fine.”
“Yeah, she is.” Cory laughs. “Are you sure this was a good idea? She’s dangerous.”
I clear my throat. “Dangerous as she may be, we all agree she’s better off with us than with Melvin.”
“She’s going to go through her heat, and we’re going to be miserable,” he points out. “What are we going to do when we rut?”
Lucas straightens a stack of already organized paper, a tick of his. “We’re alphas. She’s the omega. And when it hits, we’ll keep our distance. We’ll go to work as usual. Once the week is over, we’ll know how to resist the temptation the next time.”
“We never went through it with Emily. How do you know we can resist?” Cory drums his fingers on the arm of his leather chair.
“We’re strong.” Lucas runs his fingers through his hair. “You know what we went through when she was killed. That’s why we said never again.”
Cory frowns. “That was five years ago. I’m not saying she’s the one, but I can already tell you it’s going to kill me trying to stay away from her. She’s funny.”
“She’s feisty,” I muse, rubbing my chin. Raising an eyebrow, I glance at Lucas. He’s the strongest of the three of us, so he’s the de facto leader. He also has control issues, and Cory and I aren’t in a hurry to fight him for power. He’s good at making decisions. We’re not brothers by blood, but we’re brothers by choice, and I trust him on most things. This though… this was possibly the first time he’s ever made a mistake.
