Vette sits on my other side, his leg brushing against mine. The simple touch soothes my irritation with him.
“Fine. Netted around two hundred.” Mac tips the wine bottle back and takes a drink.
“There’s literally a glass right there.” Lark shakes his head.
“There’sliterallyno reason to dirty a glass.” Mac takes another drink to be an ass.
“Dollars?” I can’t believe I threw Vette on the floor for that much.
“Two hundred thousand,” Mac answers without missing a beat.
“And part three?” I inquire.
Vette tugs on a lock of my hair. “How are you feeling?”
Deflection at its finest.
“Pretty good.” I tip my head and glance at the red mark I left when I slapped him. “How about you? Did I hurt you?”
“You couldn’t, even if you tried,” he says.
“Yeah, Vette’s pain tolerance is insane.” Mac waggles his eyebrows. “He’d probably like it if you smacked him while he fucks you.”
“You’re so obnoxious.”
“He’s not wrong,” Vette murmurs.
“Oh.” I don’t know how to respond to that. Lark and Mac share a knowing look, and Vette leans back, resting his hands on the chair. I flounder for a moment, not sure exactly where I’ll fit with these alphas.
Would I have stayed if Laurence hadn’t factored into the decision? Will they forgive me when they find out? I could tell them I’m being threatened. Couldn’t I? Would they even believe me? I wouldn’t if I were them.
Faking a yawn, I stand. “I’m pretty tired.”
The three of them stand too.
“Want company?” Mac asks.
“Maybe another time.”
“I’ll walk you.” Vette nods at the guys and places his hand on the small of my back, escorting me.
“Afraid I’ll get lost?” I tease as we walk through the hall and toward the stairs.
“No.”
“You sound so confident.”
He shrugs. “Even if you did get lost, I’m really good at finding things when I want them.” His arm brushes against mine.
A shiver races down my spine. “And you think you’d be able to find me? Even if I didn’t want to be found?” I start up the stairs, squealing when he grabs my hand and spins me off balance. “Vette,” I shout, tipping back.
Cushioning my fall with his hands, he comes down on top of me, pinning my body to the stairs. “Like it or not, mami, you’re found. There’s nowhere you can hide.”
I shudder again, but not out of fear.
“You like that?” He pins my hands above my head and shoves his leg between mine to keep me from slipping down the stairs. “You like knowing that I’ll chase you to the end of the world and drag you back where you belong?”
Biting my cheek, I nod.
