Colt shoves a bottle of water into my hand before leaving me alone in the apartment. I drink it, searching for bread so I can make some toast. It’s the kindest thing I could do for my body right now, aside from the water.

I stare at the clock on the stove, glaring at the green numbers. When ten minutes have passed, I start to get antsy, but the doorknob rattles, and Colt hauls Lexi through my door.

“You fucking bastard, let me go, you blood sucking cunt.”

Colt is amazing.

“Lexi.”

She stops mid rant when she hears my voice, snapping her gaze to mine. A thousand emotions play over her face, the most prominent being relief and anger.

“You look well,” she snarls, jerking out of Colt’s grasp.

“Are you okay?” I ask, setting my water down and going to hug her.

She holds up her hands and steps back. “Hold up, bitch. Where the hell have you been? I’ve been trying to find you ever since I saw douchebag one and two shove you in a car and take off.”

I grimace. “I should have called.”

Crossing her arms over her chest, she pins me with a glare. “Yeah, you fucking should have. I thought you were dead or something worse, Demi. What about your parents, huh? They called me from Cancun to ask if you were okay, and you know that means they’re worried. I lied to them and said everything was fine, which I guess it is because here you are cozying up with the vampires. Jesus, Demi. What the hell?”

Colt’s sitting on the couch, flipping through channels on the TV, pretending like he can’t hear our fight.

“I’m sorry,” I say again. This time when I go in for a hug, she lets me tug her into my arms, and she clamps her arms around me.

“You’re not trapped against your will and being tortured?”

I grimace and Colt pauses to look at me.

I can’t tell her the full truth. “No, I’m here by choice.”

She pulls back and frowns. “Do you know who these people are?”

“Yes.” I nod and keep her gaze. “I know, Lexi.”

“Then what are you doing? Are you part of the mafia now? Are you a pet or something?”

The look she gives Colt would wither a weaker man, but he just shrugs and turns back to the television.

“No, I’m not a pet, and I don’t know how to explain.”

She huffs a harsh breath. “Well, fucking try. I’ve been letting them drink my blood while I tried to figure out where you were. I plotted out an entire rescue mission for you!”

“Why would you do that?” I ask, shaking her. “I didn’t ask to be saved.”

“Well, excuse the fuck out of me for caring, Demi.”

Lexi shakes her head at me, and I sigh.

“I didn’t mean it like that, Lex. I just don’t want you to get hurt because of my rash decisions.”

Like me killing a wolf in front of a dozen witnesses and being stupid enough to get taken by the Blood Mafia.

Her lip trembles. “I thought you were dead. I couldn’t bring myself to tell your parents what happened until I knew for sure. Do you know how devastating that would have been to them? To me?” Her words punch me in the gut, and my eyes water in response to her emotions.

“I’m sorry,” I whisper and look at Colt.

Colt meets my gaze, a sad look flashing over his face. “She’s been working here for about a week and a half. She’s been bitten enough to be hooked on the rush.”
