"I'm not trying to kill you, tiger." His words are so earnest, I believe him.
For the most part.
There's still one percent of my brain that wonders what he's up to.
I click on a song I like and set the device down.
"So, I heard you and Mateo earlier."
Smooth, Demi, real smooth.
"Oh?" Grayson asks. He studies the road ahead like he's playing Operation and any sort of wavering will result in the god-awful buzzing sound.
Too late to back away from this conversation.
"I assume it's useless to point out I'm not anyone's to own?"
He chuckles. "Probably, but I think you misunderstand what I mean when I say mine. When I told him you were mine, I meant you were the one I chose to start a blood bond with. Same with Mateo. We don't own you, but you're our person. You are the one we have chosen to enter into an unbreakable bond with.”
While I do like the sentiment that I'm so special they picked me above all other women, I'm a bit of a cynic.
"Why me?"
Grayson turns the music down and looks at me. "To be honest, I don't know."
Oh. That stings a bit. I thought perhaps I was the fairest of them all.
He turns to face the road again. Even vampires have to look out for other cars. "I have no idea why, tiger, but you're impossible to stop thinking about. You're nothing like any of us expected you would be when we came for you, and you continue to surprise us. I think we all like that."
"If you say you love me, I will smack you."
His lips twitch. "I wasn't going to say that. I don't love you."
I fight the urge to scoff and sayrudebecause him declaring something like that so soon after meeting me and our circumstances would be ridiculous.
"I don't love you, yet. I'm sure the time will come though. Maybe if you stab me, it'll do the trick."
I snort and slap my hand over my mouth, trying to hide the laughter.
Grayson shakes his head at me.
"What I don't understand is why you'd want to bind yourself for all eternity with someone you don't love," I say after containing my giggles and putting them in time out.
Seriously, Grayson making a joke about me stabbing Colt is not something to laugh about. Or at least, I'm pretty sure I shouldn't. Colt wouldn't appreciate it. . . then again, he may give me his little angry glare and put me in my place.
"Are you even listening to me?"
Ah, sexual fantasies you strike again.
"Sorry, what?"
Grayson sighs. "I was saying, love has nothing to do with it."
I'm pretty sure that's a song.
"While that would be a nice perk, the blood bond makes the most sense when you find someone who is your equal. . . or better yet, someone who challenges you. For Mateo, you're unlike any other woman he's ever been with."
The surge of jealousy rushing through me is completely irrational, but still, I will kill those bitches if they come sniffing around him now.
