Lord help him, I think Zander might faint.
"I was teasing," I tell the serious vampire. "I haven't seen her lately. Last I knew she went on a job for Mateo. Did you call her?"
Evelyn sighs. "No, Demi, I sent her a fax."
"May as well have sent it over by dinosaur."
She laughs. "Yes, well, funny one liners aside, she didn't answer."
"I'm sure Mateo knows where she is."
Tapping her fingers against her side, she sighs. "What good is a Hunter if they can't hunt things."
"Wow, Evelyn. You know, you should try using your big girl words. I'm not a mind reader."
She tips her head and considers me. "Are you trying to die?"
Her threats might have scared me before, but I'm pretty sure if I had to, I could take her down. She's strong, but she's not a fighter.
"Not today, love. Let me see if I can find her."
I close my eyes and focus on centering myself. When I've blocked out the noises, I visualize a globe. Guess the flat earthers were wrong. The world is definitely round.
When a black and white diagram appears in my mind, I think Alissa's name over and over, waiting for the little homing beacon to pop up.
Nothing happens.
I frown. "Zander, I can't find her."
"Okay, remember what I told you, call up your senses."
"I did," I say, sighing. "I see my little globe, but I can't see her spark." Otherwise known as a homing beacon.
"That's all right. Try again. You're still learning to flex those muscles and you've known Lexi a lot longer. Sometimes it takes a while to find someone you just met. You aren't as aware of her spark as you are Lexi's."
Right. This makes sense to me, so I take another deep breath and focus. I chant Alissa's name in my head. The globe spins.
Finally, we're getting somewhere.
Only. . . it doesn't stop. Round and round it goes.
"It's not working, Zander. It's spinning."
"Hm. Here, let me try."
I open my eyes and watch Zander work through the same process. Evelyn inspects her nails, as though we're boring her.
"Her name's Alissa?"
Evelyn nods. "Yes. Can you not find her?"
His face contorts in frustration. "No. It's similar to what happened when I tried to find Lacey."
"So she's missing as well," Evelyn concludes. "Fucking hell. I swear if someone tries to start a war again I'm going to lose my shit. How many wars will it take before people mind their goddamn business?" She pins me with a scathing glare.
I blink. "Is that rhetorical?"
I'm never sure with her.
