I start to growl some not so kind words at her, but Mateo says, "Thanks," and grabs my arm, hauling me out of the booth.

"You can't hurt the waitress, baby girl."

"Verbal lashings never harmed a soul."

He grips my neck with his hand. "You know that's not true." His brown gaze flits over my face. "I'm sure they're fine."

Funny thing is, for once, he doesn't sound so certain.

Chapter Thirty-Three

Demi

When we get home we go to my apartment and I use Mateo's phone to call Lexi.

"Listen, dude, I don't want to say it again. I am not interested in extending my car's warranty. Shove your papers up your ass."

I laugh. "Lexi, it's me."

She snorts. "Oh, sorry. Why are you calling me on an unknown number?"

"I broke my phone earlier, I'm using a friend's."

"A friend, huh? Is he a handsome friend?"

Mateo lifts an eyebrow, obviously invested in my answer. I flip him off.

"He's all right. Hey, have you heard from my parents? Did they call yours by chance?"

Our families have been close since before Lexi or I came into the picture. Whenever they come home, Mom always goes to see Lexi's mom.

"Um. I talked to my mom earlier, and she was supposed to go out with your mom tomorrow for coffee. Is everything okay?"

I sigh. "Yeah, I think so. We were supposed to meet for dinner, but they never showed up."

She laughs. "Maybe they decided to stay an extra week."

"Yeah, maybe." I chew on my lip. It wouldn't be the first time they've spontaneously changed their plans, but they always call me. Especially when we have plans to meet up.

"Oh my gosh, did I tell you about Katrina's cousin?"

I talk to Lexi for a little while, listening to her tell me all about her new fling and some of our friends. Then the worry starts to eat away at me and I can't focus.

"Hey, Lexi? I'm sorry, I have to go, can we talk later?"

She whines. "But I haven't talked to you in forever."

"It's been like a week, Lex."

"You know what I mean, Demi. Did I do something wrong?"

"No, you didn't do anything. I've been distracted lately. I'm sorry."

"Oh," she sighs. "Kevin's such an asshole. You're so much better off without him, hun. Don't worry, the fog of post-break up will lift soon and you'll feel amazing."

I smile, because Lexi's always been overly optimistic. "Yeah, you're probably right. Thanks, Lex."

She makes kissing noises into the phone. "Love you, D."
